where the digestion of proteins,
starches, sugars and fats by the
pancreatic juice and the bile
takes place!, the jejunum (first
two-fifths of small intestine be
yond duodenum) and the ileum
(remainder of small Intestine)

cecum (blind gut) lying two or
three Inches below the ilio-cecal
valve between small and large
intestine or colon.

and consider the Interesting fact
that the old timers called the
cecum the typhlon and hence
inflammation of the cecum was
typhlitis? About the time Topsy
was born typhlitis was the
name a few of the more advanc
ed doctors applied to what the
old timers called "inflammation
of the bowels" Topsy was my
first and only horse, a beautiful
white-faced sorrel oh, oh,
there I go again off on a wistful
dream of the golden days of
dire poverty when I scolded my
first and but I'm young yet
my wife for covering her eyes
when we were out for a drive
and Topsy pampered with oats
and kindness, playfully kicked
up her heels ... a little later
the term universally used in
stead of typhlitis was appendi
citis. Now let us resume the
tour. The remainder of the
journey is less exciting, for here
nothing happens. Just a climb
of a foot or less up the ascend
ing colon, around the turn un
der the liver, then straight west
under the epigastrium and
things, around the splenic flex
ure, and down, down . . . but
who cares? As I say, nothing

becomes semi-solid by the time
it reaches the sigmoid ,

individual. Any medicine or
diet that keeps the material
fluid or liquid is likely to be
injurious.
In the healthy Individual who
is not so credulous as the gen
eral run of Wiseacres about
"regulating" the bowels the
food taken at any particular
meal or the residue after stom
ach and duodenal digestion
reaches the near turn of the
colon (under the liver) In six to
eight hours, rounds the splenic
flexure in the north left corner
about the ninth or tenth hour
and arrives in the sigmoid in
twelve to fifteen hours. Here
it tarries until the impulse for
evacuation occurs and the now
semi-solid material Is passed
straight through the rectum (4
inches) and anal canal (l'i
inches). The rectum is normally
empty at all other times.
