BIT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care By OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. fUadon should addross inqulrlaa toi Or William Brady. 264 El Camlne BtIt Hllll CalU. NOW SEE WHAT I MEAN' We like your column, al though we do not always agree with you. "We" means our en- tire family Our pet peeve is the subject of crl. Crl, let 01' Doc Brady ex plain for the benefit of cas ual or new readers, should be pro n o u n e e d "kree". It is a coined word, an abbrevia tion for the cumbersome term Common Respiratory Infection I insist on use of the term cri instead of the term cold, be cause when you call it cri you are honest with yourself and everybody else you give every body fair warning that you are coming down with nobody knows what at this stage and they had better keep far enouijh from you to be beyond your polite conversational spray range that is anywhere up to five feet the range Increases to ten or twelve feet if you happen to be one of those ignor amuses who sneeze and cough without covering mouth and nose with handkerchief, hand screen or mask to prevent spread of the respiratory infec tion to other persons. And please remember, you never know, and probably even a physician cannot tell in the stage of invasion, whether the cri will prove to be measles, diphtheria meningitis infantile paralysis influenza a mild coryza or a fatal pneumonia Thank you. Now let the cor respondent tell us more about that pet peeve. ... the subject of crl. Darned If we can see what difference It makes whether you say cold when your eyes water and your nose drips and you feel gener ally out-of-sorts. Calling it crl doesn't help at all. (E. M. D.) Not a chance that we can ever agree about it unless you are willing to accept as sound and reasonable this truth: Three fourths of the illness In the community at least the Ill ness that requires medical treat ment or care, is the immediate or remote effect of respiratory Infection prSTaniabl respira tory Infection, for the most pnrt, if only people and physi cians and health authorities were not so reluctant to give up their nineteenth century views and take twentieth century attitude. ' If you call your crl "cold" you are simply trying to de ceive yourself or your friends, o that you and they will feel no compunction or resentment about spread of whatever you have got to your playmates, pu pils, fellow workers, members of your household and any strangers who may be so un fortunate as to do bustess with you, sit near you In church, theater, on train or bus. On the other hand, If you call It "crl" until you know precisely what It will turn out to be, you play fair. That is the golden rule of hygiene. In the booklet "Call It Crl" I give the best suggestions and advice I can give concerning the prevention and treatment of acute respiratory Infections, and chronic "catarrh", bronchi tis, sinusitis and the like. It con tains Instructions for making and using a slmplo fool-proof cough medicine for child or adult. The nostrums popularly used to kill cough you finish it. Send twenty-five cents and stamped self addressed letter size envelope not a miniature for the booklet. QUESTIONS ANSWERS Running Ear Son had a running ear for over 15 year.
