The 1045 total acreage burned was more than the amount burn ed during the entire preceding five years, although the numher . of fires, 823, was smaller this year than any of the precdlng five years with the exception oi 1942. Bolts Main Cau. Lightning was the biggest fire bug with 325 fires to its credit in 1945. Smokers head the list of man-caused fires with 54 blazes credited to that cimse Incendiary, which struck mainly In southwest Oregon, caused 10U fires, the report said. Other causes were railroads, 16; logging, 58; slashing, includ ing debris burning, 49; campers, 42, and miscellaneous, 71. Fires started by hunters were not segrated in the report and are listed among campers, smok ers or miscellaneous. The biggest fire of the year, of course, was the Tillamook-Siil-monberry conflagration which burned over 133,000 acres, near ly half the total burned this year. The Cronin Creek srea of the lower Nehalcm river is not included In the Salmon Til lamook fire even though it was caused by spot fires from the Tillamook blaze, the report stated. Polk Fir Large Polk county's fire in the Wil lamette Valley Lumber company operations covered more than 12,000 acres before being brought under control by serv ice men, loggers and others. The 1945 season marks the first year since 1939 that the atate has had any major fire. Only 96,347 acres were burn ed In the five-year period from 1940 to 1944 inclusive. That is average of only 19,269 acres yearly. Add this year's forest fire de struction to that and for a six year overage you got 43,500 acres burned. If In.1 IN Edward A.
