TWELVE MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Wednesday, Dee. 19. 1845 ARMS FOR PEACE A plea for the American peo ple to heed the lessoni of the past and for this nation to use her material and spiritual pow er for lasting world peace, was veleed by Rev. George Smith of the St. Pauls i-piscopai church of Salem at the Med- ford Rotary club Tuesday noon. Rotarians and their wives gath ered at the Hotel Mcdford, en joyed a Christmas program of music as a prelude to Rev. Smith's address. "We must not rest on our laurels and forget some of the lessons of the disarmament con. ference after World War I, the Briand-Kellogg Peace Pact and Hie League of Nations," the speaker urged. "We must keep our feet on the ground while our heads are in the sky. Rev. Smith scored those who oppose adequate military power for America and universal serv ice, the people who favor giving Americas military secrets and the atomic bomb to the world and the growing faction seeking to scrap the United Nations or ganization. We must not let down our defenses now as we did after the last war. The speak er was introduced by Rev. George R. Turney of St. Mark's Episcopal church of this city. In a delightful musical pro gram arranged by Sydney Bouck, George Maddox sung "The Sleigh" and "The Lord's Prayer." Numbers were present ed by a quartette comprising Imogene Smith, George Maddox and Mr. and Mrs. Sydney (iourk and the Evergreen string en semble entertained with appro priate Christinas music. The en somblo Included Vivlane Busch, Hurlan Bosworth, Mrs. Betty Morton, Ray Cleveland, Blake Maddox, Victta Lewis, Reglna Murk, Robert Bosworth and Bar bara Olson. WAR COMMANDER DIES Rutland, Vt., Dec. 19(U.n Mai. Gen. Leonard F. (Red) Wing, 82, commander of the 43rd (Winged Victory) Infantry division during four major cam paigns in the Pacific, was found dead In bed at his home here early today, a victim of heart disease. ON HIGH HILLS The heaviest snow In five years now covers the high hills surrounding the Rogue river valley giving promise of an ex tended irrigation season next year, according to County Water master Clinton Smith. The snow is now at a greater depth than last April, and is hard crusted and solidly packed on frozen Ground. There is more than 30 Inches of snow at Fish Lake, more than for all last year when the top depth was around 20 incnes. Twenty inches of snow is re ported from Union Creek. Meas urements at Four Mile Lake are higher. Mt. McLoughlin (Pitt) Is now more deeply snow blanketed than last season, old residents say. Watcrmastcr Smith figures, with additional snows to come In February and March,. irriga tion users will have ample water for a long season. federaFworker pay hike voted Washington, Dec. 18 U.R The senate has voted to give classified federal workers pay increases averaging 11 per cent. The vote was 62 to 3. The senate adopted a com promise plan yesterday propos ed by Sen. Harry Flood Byrd, D., Va. It would grant raises of 36 per cent on salaries up to $1200, 18 per cent on pay be tween $1,200 and $4,600 and 9 per cent on pay above $4,600. The Increase affects about 1,100,000 government employes under the civil service system. The raises will amount to about $223,000,000 annually. The bill now goes to the house, whore action Is not ex pected until next spring at the earliest. FREE GARBAGE DUMPING OFFER Citizens of the city of Med ford now may dump trash and rubbish free of charge from passenger cars onto the City Sanitary Service property east of Barnett Road, according to a report made at the city coun cil meeting last night. The proposal was Initiated by the utility since the labor short age prevents it from giving the full service it desires. While no limit has been speci fied as to the amount which may be dumped the no cost pro position refers to passenger vehicles only. SHOPPING 4 SlS ' CARLAN INFANT Chelsea, Mass., Dec. 19 U.R) A medical examiner filed a report today indicating that Baby Ronald Carlan central figure In a hoax kidnaping died of nntural causes. Dr. William J. Brlckley filed it report with Dist. Atty. Wil liam J. Foley which read: "Ronald E. Carlan came to death by asphyxiation; acute general respiratory infection; and a recent focal bronchial pneumonia, due to inhalation of food, the manner to be deter mined." In disclosing the medical ex aminer's report, Foley said: Dr. Brlckley says it was the fourth case of pneumonia the child hnd. The lungs were con gested by food on three separ ate occasions, days apart." It was Indicated that Foley might ask a continuance of the case In which the Infant's mother, Mrs. Rose Carlan, is charged with murder. STORETOTCITY Medford merchants will not close their places of business Monday, Dec. 24, according to Noble Vincent, president of the Merchants' association. Vincent polled members of the associa tion at the request of the Jack son County Chamber of Com merce, where inquiries had been received concerning the closure. It is reported that in some southern Oregon towns mer chants are planning to remain closed the day before Christmas. It has been announced that union barber shops of the city will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. Ex-County Judge Welcomes Chance To Go Barefoot Kansas City, Tex. (U.R) Tom Smiley Just smiled at shoe rationing. To him It wasn't a hardship; it was an excuse to go barefoot. Now that shoes aren't ration ed, Smiley still likes what he calls "unrestricted foot case." He doesn't intend to put shoes back on again ever. "I like room to wiggle my toes," he said. Smiley, one-time county Judge and active attorney In this Southwest Texas town, first started going barefoot two years ago. lie says when it's hot his feet feel fine; when it's raining they like it even better, and when it's cold he dons light saiulals. "But It hardly ever gels very cold here," Smiley said, "and as for not wearing shoes hurling my health, that's the bunk. I've never felt better." Bear Creek Orchards SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS PLANS WELL ADVANCED The Salvation Army program of Christmas activities is well advanced to bring Yuletide cheer to the shut-ins and unfor tunates of Jackson county, Ad jutant C. Rosnick announced to day. The Salvation Army Girl Guards, under leadership of Miss Pearl Gay, have been busy for the past month making cheer baskets. These will be delivered to patients in the convalescent homes of Medford, Jacksonville and Ashland. The girls will sing Christmas carols at each home. Sunday afternoon the girls will entertain the patients at the Camp White hospital with their beautiful carols. Musical accompaniment will be furnish ed by two members of Mrs. Prentice's Accordion band. Gifts furnished by the Salvation Army, U.S.O. and Mann's De partment store have been wrap ped by members of the Salvation Army Home League and the league will distribute them at Camp White. Toys, food and clothing will be given to many who otherwise would not have that little extra that it takes to make a Merry Christmas. A community Christmas tree program will be held at the Sal vation Army hall, 238 North Bartlctt street, Saturday night. Adjutant Rosnick will bo the program chairman with Mrs. 1 Bert Wenzel as program direc tor. Mrs. Viola Hall will offici ate at the piano. Santa Claus will be there with a treat for all. The public is invited. TWO DOwWoWNT FIRES CAUSE HEAVY DAMAGE Tulsa, Okla., Dec. 19 (U.R) Two separate fires described as the worst in the city's history raged uncontrolled in the down- town district for two hours to-! day and unofficial estimates placed damage at "around $1, 500,000." : A stronz north wind whipped ; the flames and a four-above zero temperature hampered fire-1 fil'hters.
