Your H salth and It's Care By OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. RMdtr should addratt inquirivt toi Dr William Brady. 264 CI Camlno Bavarlf HUH Calil. THE USE OF POWE I began experimenting when I was a medical student, con tinued the habit when I was an intern, but by that time I ex perimented on patients as well as on my self. Well, the patients were , getting tree i .-Sl nosP',a! care getting free and my ser- Jf vices too it MfM was only fair that I should AKSjaaaII get something Dr. Brady out of it. One day I wanted to demonstrate to some fellow Interns and some nurses the most effective antidote for carbolic acid. I filled a basin with pure liquefied phenol (carbolic) and Immersed my hands in It maybe only one hand, I can't remember just how reckless I may have been for a minute by the watch. Then I removed the hand or hands from the carbolic acid. The skin was white and the hand or hands quite numb. Then I immersed the hand or hands in a basin of pure grain alcohol. After a minute or two I took the hand or hands out of the alcohol. Now the skin was nor mal, the numbless was gone and there was no further effect. Some physicians (including Doc Brady) believe that pure liquified phenol ("carbolic acld"l is the best agent for cauterizing a wound, say a bite inflicted by a dog. or any wound by any animal or fowl that may pos sibly rontaminate or infect such wound with the germs of lock law. When the pure nhenol has done its work (say In 10 seconds) it may be neutralized by apolv ing pure grain alcohol to the whitened tissue cauterized by the phenol, for an equal length of time. In a report on Landry's (ascending) Paralysis followln" administration of Pasteur treat ment Dr. C. R. Thomas (Tenn. State Med. Ass't Jiuir., July. '45) states that "pure phenol destrovs the virus rapidly". He refers to the virus of rabies a hyoo thetical virus, since no one has established the cause of rabies In an'mals and. in my judement therefore, it Is absurd for a oh"sician or other presumably informed person to assert that this or any other substance ap n'ied to a wound "destroys the virus" of rabies. But then, I'm just a plodding country doctor and maybe if I knew better I'd defer politely to the eminent medical authorities who. are never so good as when they are pulling some such trick as that on the gullible public. It is probably futile to try to explain in a paragraoh the dif ference between antiseptic and aseptic surnery or treatment of wounds. Your dictionary will tell you that asepsis . means "state of being aseptic; the meth ods or processes of making or keeping aseptic". And then asep tic means "free or freed from pathogenic microorganisms" (di sease germs), "preventing sepsis, or not involving sepsis; as aseptic surgery, characterized by the sterilization of instru- DANCE TONIGHT DON SIGLOW BAND Returning cy popular request with out favorite singer Larry A DIAGRAMLESS PUZZLE Crossword Puzzle Acaoia 1 Lay to it) r round ing matter Mtfce iplsUbloc noise -.0 Comb form: lan( il Danile :3 In cfte that i3 StuBDfirn per to a 15 Manuscript nbbr.) In ideal aseptic surgery or wound treatment no antisep tic, germicide, disinfectant or cauterant is applied to the wound. The normal healing of any wound is best assured by (1) absolute cleanliness and (2) ab solute rest.
