EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Your Hsalth and It's Care By OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Raadari should addiass Inquiries toi Dr. William Brady. 266 El Camlno Bat-arty Hllla. Calit TONSILLOTOMY OR TO A boy had suffered painful at tacks of quinsy at about yearly Intervals for several years. Sometimes me abscess around the tonsil . . 1 -J U a a U- u o y " u nights of great discom fort, and relief and reco very would quickly follow. Some times It was .'.JSL'ZL2t n e c e s sary to Dr.' Brady lance the ab scess an incision Into the cen tre of the swelling of soft pal ate or pillar ln quinsy the pus collects around the tonsil, not In the tonsil). Such lancing, by the way. is usually the best treatment for quinsy. If the pa tient wants immediate relief. Then after several such at tacks the boy suffered one of the recognized sequels of ton' slllitls or peritonsillitis (quinsy), namely, chorea (St. Vitus's dance). It was more than a year befon he got over the chorea. The quinsy attacks came nearly as often as ever, wnen tne ooy was well along In his 'teens he consulted a new doctor about his throat. The new doctor ad vised tonsillotomy. Now tonsillotomy n.eans liter ally cutting the tonsil, slicing off a portion of tonsil, or, as tne lay man sometimes calls It, "clip ping" the tonsil. The boy ac cepted this advice. So the doctor explained it would hurt for a jiffy, like lancing the quinsy or extracting a tooth the boy was game, the doctor ringed the ton sil with his cutting little snlcker snacker (tonslllotome), went phttl on one side, then repeated the trick on the other side, and the seance was over.- This happened long ago, but at the time I considered It in adequate treatment. I believed then that if any tonsil surgery was Indicated In such cases the only proper procedure was ton sillectomy, which means literal ly removing the entire tonsil or at any rate an attempt to "get all of the tonsil." The boy never had another at tack of quinsy or severe sore throat, That may have been co incidence, or on the other hand it may have been because the gadget Just happened to slice off the portion of tonsil that con tained the septic focus or nidus where the germs (pneumococcl, streptococci, staphylococci) re sponsible for the quinsy were harbored. Anyway here Is what I believe to be good, sound, and above all Ml SAFE policy: Tonsillotomy under light ancs tlisla is tho method of choice for enlarged (hypcrtrophled) tonsils in children. For Infected tonsils (or for eliminating the possible source of Infection in any case of focal Infection) dia thermy (electro-coagulation) treatments by a physician skilled in this difficult tech ' nlque. For enlarged tonsils and or adenoids causing any Impair ment of hearing or middle ear inflammation X-ray treat ments to shrink adenoids and tonsils. QUKSTIONS & ANS.WKRS now tu M. B. Al baugh and John Winterhalder at their plant on the Crater Lake highway near here. Although the plant is not en tirely finished, the two men are producing bricks to partly sup ply a local demand. The bricks, molded with tongue and groove, make pos sible the construction of an en tire chimney without the use of mortar. An eight inch chimney of any height can be built from the product. At present the men plan to specialize in chimney material but in time hope to manufacture tile alse. Winterhalder formerly own ed the Cozy Nook confectionery In Medford.
