'I WIFELESS VET. HELP BY POLICE New Orleans (U.R) Everyone knows that "the law" has sever al obligations other than Just be ing a policeman. For the police often are called upon to lend a helping hand. An ex-service man stepped out of a New Orleans train sta tion recently and Police Ser geant Robert L. Brown saw im mediately that the sandy-haired young man needed a helping hand, and badly. He carried a heavy hand trunk In one hand and a tiny baby in the other. The young father smiled wry ly and said "You Just don't know." He wouldn't give his name, but admitted he was traveling across country from New York to Seattle. Wife Con " He explained It this way: "My wife's gone. The baby is all I have and I intend taking care of Km and raising him my self. I can't allow use of my name. I Just can't take any chances of having my son taken from me." Within a few minutes after being taken into custody by the police sergeant, the trio were at a swanky New Orleans hotel where reservations are all but lmDossible to make. Soon a room, hot bottles of formula and a baby bed were provided and the three-months-old infant and his exhausted father were getting a much needed lay-over rest. The ex-soldier said later that he had received a medical dis charge after spending 14 months In a hospital, where he had re covered from wounds In the European theater. Washington, Dec. 12 (U.R) The navy announced today that it will terminate active duty training of NROTC trainees and V-12 engineers on or about March 1. The V-5, or aviation, portion of the V-12 program, which in cludes 6,000 students, is not affected. CONGRESS nuui OF MAIN'S LAND Washington (U.R) The Ameri can Forestry Assn. has announc ed the formation of an American Forestry Congress to formulate a postwar conservation program for the nation's 630.000,000 acres of forest land. The congress will be held here upon completion of a nation wide survey now being made by the association to determine the effects of war drains on the for est resources of the United States. This survey, expected to be completed early In 1946. will re veal the amount of timber in each state, its location, charact er and composition. W. S. Rosecrans. Los Angeles, president of the association, in announcing the congress, point ed out that with the survey It will be possible to analyze the nation's forestry situation, state by state and on an overall national basis. At that time, he said, "It Is Im portant that all forest interests unite in developing postwar pro grams that will speed progress in meeting future needs for wood." PHOENIX PLANT WILL INCREASE CAPACITY Phoenix. Dec. 12 A new ad dition that will double the ca pacity of the plant will be made to the Associated Fruit cc mpany packing house at Phoenix, ac cording to J. P. Naumes, man ager of the firm. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly after January 1.
