OPA AGENTS PLAN
CHECK-UP HERE ON
USED AUTO DEALS
It Is expected that In the near
future OPA investigators will
arrive In this area to continue
the check-up being made
throughout the state on evasions
concerning the sale of used cars,
according to the local war price
and ration board. A news re
lease from Portland quotes
Charles Kaufman, OPA enforce
ment attorney, to the effect that
an alarming number of flagrant
violations were uncovered dur
ing the first days of the Portland
check-up.
Among the phony transactions
uncovered were deals involving
acceptance of trade-ins at a cer
tain price which was later re
duced when the customer finally
cot his contract papers, accept
ance of "side payments" by cus
tomers, some of which were
made in separate checks on
which payment was stopped be
fore the seller could cash the
check. Illegal repair bills, irregu
lar record keeping and the prac
tice of some dealers of insisting
unlawfully that he will not sell
a car unless the prospective buy
er has a trade-in, the release
states.
Some of the illegal deals
found In used car sales mny be
carried ovdr into sales of new
cars unless they are uncovered
and stamped out now according
to Kauynun.
