TWO MCDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE - f - ' We haven't had much to say ince the football debacle here ifrhanksRlving afternoon but 'here goes for our opinion of 'what happened: First of all, the final score vitas Grant 7, Medford 6 Med ford is out and Grant in for the state championship playoff, and that's that. It is not our inten tion to make a Jot of excuses for the team nor to condemn or criticize Coach Al Simpson. We feel Simpson did what he thought would win the game PAINTING H. F. THE PACIFIC TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY 145 NO. Medford had played a hard schedule of eight games with out a week's layoff anywhere along the line and then had to play a gruelling game with North Bend in which they took a terrific physical beat ing while Grant had the week off and could scout the Tor nado en masse. Because of the way Grant bot tled up Glenn Bostwick almost every time he got the bail and I because of the way they played against Medford's line, there is I no doubt in our mind but that 'they had the locals well scout- ed. Bostwick and Jerry Clark I were playing under handicaps ' because of shoulder separations. Evang. M. L. Davidson 1 Their Injured appendages were tied to their sides and they could I not lift their injured arms more , than about six or eight Inches ! from their sides. Despite the handicaps, we feel Simpson was justified in using them for their presence in the lineup was a morale builder for the team and their "headiness" was a definite asset. Grant had probably the best lina that Medford had been up against In their two unbeaten years and Curtis and Stamm, the General ends, played about the best ball it has been our privilege to watch In a long while. Med ford's forward wall was spark ed by the superb playing of Nick Greene, Glenn Tingley and Darrell Riggs, Statistics showed that Medford outplay ed the Portland city champs in almost every department except scoring. Medford rolled up 300 yards to Grant's 97 and made 11 first 'downs to two which ordinarily is enough to win any ball game. We feel Simpson didn't let the boys open up with their passing attack earlier than the closing minutes of the game be cause of the stiff southeast wind which is tricky with a football. The wind had died down when they did open up but Lady Luck was no longer with Medford and time ran out before the boys could reach the last white stripe. We would like to suggest a t game between Medford and j Polytechnic high school of San , Francisco for the "crying towel i championship of the coast." According to the San Fran cisco Examiner, Poly had roll ad over 29 consecutive oppon ents by big scores and had walloped St. Ignatius, their cross-town rival, by about four touchdowns some three weeks ago. The two teams met the other day for the city title and St. Ignatius won 13 to 6. According to the story, the Poly players were stunned by the upset and unable to be lieve they had finally been conquered. So Medford shouldn't feel too bad it hap pens other places, too. Samuelson, who has been- a close observer of Rose Bowl games for 18 years, said In the Pasadena Star-News yesterday that the Bowl committee want ed Army, asked them to take the bid. and was then forced to choose Alabama rather than find itself with no strong contender at all for the New Years Day game after Army refused to give a definite answer. As late as Thanksgiving, Samuelsen wrote, the Bowl com mittee was still trying to get Army, but the Cadets hung back on three conditions: 1. Gen. Dwight Elsenhower must give an opinion as new chief of staff. 2. If this was forthcoming. Army still could give no answer until after the Army-Navy game Dec. 1. 3. The Army must beat Navy. "The Rose Bowl was willing tn Gamble on Army's winning over Navy if the war depart ment would come forth with an opinion on the Bowl game, but West Point would have none of that," Samuelsen said. Samuelsen said Alabama had been given a Sugar Bowl bid, but preferred the Rose Bowl. He added that the committee fear ed it would lose both Army and Alabama unless It made a bid for the southern team i before the Crimson Tide tired of wait ing and signed for the Sugar Bowl. EAGLES RUN UP 16-0 New York, Nov. 28 (U.PJ Unless the New York Giants clarify the eastern division Na tional Football league race as tliey did the western, Philadel phia and Washington will nave to meet in a playoff for the right to battle Cleveland for the cham pionship. Yesterday's 18 to 0 Eagle vic tory over Washington tied the Phiiadelphians and the Redskins at six won and two lost. Both have two games to go. Phila delphia plays New York and Boston; the Redskins meet Pitts burgh and New York. The lead ers were favored to sweep through these games, but New York was not lightly regarded by the contending coaches, who remember that it was the Giants who upset the Detroit Lions when the Lions were tied with Cleveland for the western lead. At New York, the Green Bay Packers used line plunges by Fullback Ted Fritsch instead of pass-catching by Don Hutson to beat the Giants, 23 to 14. Fritsch scored the first two Green Bay touchdowns. The Chicago Bears romped over Pittsburgh, 28 to 7, with George McAfee scoring three I touchdowns. It Is the final game of the season and the only thing that could have made the ending more perfect would have been to have both the Trojans and the Bruins go Into the tilt unde feated. The University of Washington Huskies, one-time major candi date for the Bowl, dropped an other game this one to the Washington State Cougars, 7-0. As a result of the victory the Cougars can't be completely counted out of the Bowl derby. Coach Phil Sorboe's club has won six, lost two and tied one. If UCLA should down USC, the Cougars technically would have the best percentage rating in the conference. A Trojan win would cinch the bid for the two- time defending champions. Oklahoma A&MIs Expected To G et Sugar Bowl Game New Orleans, Nov. 28 (U.R) Sugar Bowl promoters, admitted ly taken aback by Duke's with drawal from Bowl consideration, were expected today to grab Ok lahoma A. & M., with Louisiana State as a possible opponent of the undefeated Aggies. Alabama's acceptance of the Rose Bowl bid, Holy Cross' ac ceptance of an Orange Bowl in vitation and the Duke announce ment left the powerful Okla homa Aggies as the most logical choice, and reports at Oklahoma City last night said that the Ag gies already had accepted the Sugar Bowl invitation. School authorities would not confirm the report. St. Mary'i of California, the University of Texas and Vir ginia were believed to be under consideration. Gift endowments to Stanford University now surpass three million dollars. SUMMONS FOR PUBLICATION In the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon for Jackson County. G. P.
