After one first period threat against California died on the two-yard line, the Bruins failed to dent the Bear line and were on the defensive for the re mainder of the game. The lone touchdown was scored on one of the weirdest plays of the year. It came in the third quarter with the Boars in possession of the ball on ttieir own 34. There big Jack Lerond dropped back to try a quick-kick. The UCLA forwards slithered through and partially blocked the punt. But it was scooped up on the right side of the line by Bear Quarterback Welch. Welch evaded a flock of Bruin tacklers and broke past the line of scrimmage. Welch tateralled to Lerond and the big end went 38 yards for the touchdown, scoring on his own kick on a play netting 74 yards from the point where the blocked punt was recovered. Albuquerque, N. UTZ MEN'S WEAR TROJANS DEFEAT STATERS 34 TO 7; SEEK BOWL GAME Tannehill Chief Scorer Beavers Far Behind in Statistics Los Angeles, Nov. 24 (UP.) University of Southern Califor nia emerged as the west's top Rose Bowl contender today with an easy 34 to 7 win over Oregon State college before 35,000 fans at Memorial Coliseum. The Trojans uncorked 185 pound Ted Tannehill, who per sonally crossed the Beaver goal line three times and led his teammates to scores in every period of the game. With University of California at Los Angeles losing to Cali fornia 6 to 0 at Berkeley, the Trojans played like men in spired. They started their scor ing early, and were never headed. Tannehill, Lillywhite and Mor ris combined their running power to tear the OSC line to shreds and put USC ahead in the first period after four suc cessive first downs and 1 lily white's pass to Tannehill for a touchdown. The conversion was no good, putting the Trojans in front 6 to 0. Undismayed, Oregon State cashed in on an off-side penalty to make a one-point lead after a poor kick by Karamanos the ball was returned to the Beavers on the penalty and Hartmann and Lorenz carried the ball to the USC 48 where Dick Gray faded back and passed to Gibbs for the score. This lead was quickly nulli fied, however, when a USC quick-kick landed dead on the Oregon State 14 and the Beavers could not get out of the hole. Joe Bradford intercepted Dick Gray's pass on the Beaver 12. The Oregon Staters kept the Tro jans from scoring and took the ball on downs but Karamanos was caught behind his own goal line by End Adelman for a safety and two points for USC. The Trojans now led 8 to 7 and went on from there to win at their leisure. The Beavers, far behind in statistics at the half, caught up a little with Southern California in the final period. Southern California outgained Oregon State 302 yards to 211, and made 15 first downs to 11 for the Staters. Tannehill was easily the outstanding ground gainer with a total of 112 yards in 10 plays' for an 11.2 yards average per try. Stranahan drove and putted his way up among the leaders after getting off to a bad start with a three-over-par 75. Stranahan birdied the 7th, 10th, 12th and 18th holes this afternoon while Keiser had birdies on the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 12th and 19th holes. ANNO UNCING THE OPENING of the Union Service Station 618 East Main on Monday, November 26 By 6-0 MARGIN Pullman, Wash., Nov. 24 (U.R' Washington State College capitalized on a second-period break to score a 7 to 0 home coming victory over the Univer sity of Washington Huskies on a muddy field here today before 15.000 chilled fans. The scoring opportunity came just 40 seconds into the second period when Reserve Back Ross intercepted a long pass thrown by Norton and scampered 39 yards to the Washington 11 yard stripe. On the next play, Quar terback Perrault ran wide around his left end to score standing up. Cooley came in the game and kicked the extra point. Except for a Washington- dominated first period, Wash ington State held the upper hand throughout the game, playing heads-up ball on the slippery field, while the luckless Huskies fumbled themselves out of at least one scoring opportunity. Washington State collected most of the breaks, recovering four of the Huskies six fumbles and intercepting six passes for big runback gains. Washington State also completed seven out of 11 pass attempts, while the ever-anxious Huskies made good only four out of their 17 aerial tries. The Washington scoring threat came late in the third period and WSC Guard Laurie Niemi became the hero of the Cougars. Hungar, who scored the touchdown that beat WSC six weeks ago, drove to the Cougar three yard line with first and goal to go, only to have Niemi set him back to the seven and then fall on Hungar's fumble on the next play. In fact, it was Hungar that Washington State was after and he was thrown for big losses several times during his occa sional brief appearances in the game. Hungar's touchdown at Seattle beat Washington State 8-0 in their first game this sea- PETE, NEGRO TO CLASH THURSDAY Pete Belcastro and Roush Rufus Jones, two of the toughest matmen in the Junior heavy weight ranks, will battle It out in one half of the double main event wrestling program at Med ford armory Thursday night, Promoter Mack Lillard said yes terday. E CLINIC WILL BE First clinic for prospective basketball officials for Southern Oregon will be held in room 2 at Medford high school Monday evening at 7:30, according to an announcement by Roland Parks, head of the Southern Oregon Officials association. Parks states that only four veteran officials are left in Southern Oregon from last year's list. It will be necessary to train a new class to help handle the games. One example of the need is shown by the fact that the Association has requests for men to handle eight games in Southern Oregon A and B competition in one evening, ac cording to Parks. The examination, which takes three hours of work, will be ad ministered by Principal Lester Harris in Medford, Principal Frank Thomas in Grants Pass and Prinqipnl Earl Rogers in Ashland. Much preliminary study is necessary before one is able to pass the rigid examina tion, Parks said. The Southern Oregon Officials Association will recommend no one for of ficiating, who has not taken and passed the examination, it was stated.
