TWO MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Tuesday. Not. 10, 1943 ttmp; Sport Chips HARRY CHIPMAN .; S ,5i "'J Mail Tribune Sports Editor The Oregon High School Ac tivitles association plans to something about small schools getting the playoff gomes in the Oregon high school football race, according to an article in Mon day's Oreeon Journal. The article says the OHSAA agrees hard and fust rules are necessary to clear up me siiua tion. An attempt will no maa to place the titular games on share -and -share -alike baal throiiEhout the state, the story further comments. However, was further stated, an under lying power in the association Is the necessity of raising a great deal of the Bssoclation'a funds throuch football games, thus only those cities and towns with reasonably large grid stadiums likelv will be considered for such games. That should be Medford's cue to get busy and put soma scats in their grid plant or they probably will be by passed on future big games. Medford is big enough (and still growing) to get a lot of these games and will prob ably have a turn up near the top mora years than not in the future. The game with Grant high of Portland here Thursday after noon Is a good example of what is to come. Bleachers are be ing constructed around the end zones in an effort to scat ap proximately 10,000 people In a stadium with a covered stand built to hold 1,200. We do not doubt that the place will be packed Thursday no matter the weather but we do know of sev eral who stayed away from games during the season because they could not be accommodat ed in the reserved section. One school official even went so far as to say If the seating space would be kept limited, fans would clamor for reserred tickets but if space was plentiful the de mand would drop off. That's Just a mite far fetched as we see it. Medford owes It to the football fans to see that they are comfortably seated and they also owe It to the fans to see that all big games pos sible are brought here. It will be a battle of T-forma-tloni when Grant and Medford get together Thursday after noon. Al Simpson said the Tor nado would be at full strength Available Immediately from Portland Stock GASOLINE POWER UNITS Va, Vi. 3's, 5, 9, 18'i, 21, 40, 100 and 120 h.p. Write or Phone Contractors Equipment Corp. Portland 14, Oregon VErmont 4131 1215 S.E. Grand Ave. for the game and Coach Jim (Mush) Torson sends like word from Portland. The game is go ing to be one of the toughc-st contests seen on the local turf in many a moon with odds about as even as they can get. The only comparative scores against mutual opponents are against Klumuth Falls, beaten the first game of the season by Grant 20-7 and walloped in mid-season by Medford, SI to 0. Grant has scored 184 points in eight games against 31 by their opponents while the Tornado has piled up 478 against their foes' 20. Independent basketball Is slowly getting started after a four-year shutdown because of the war. Hotel Medford and Medford Athletic Association are sponsoring teams with the Central Point Athletic Asso ciation also coming in. A full schedule will be drawn up for the teams, it is planned. For the past few weeks Coach Tex Oliver has been the subject of considerable panning in the University of Oregon's daily newspaper, The Emerald. Let ters to the sports editor of the Emerald suggest an Al-Simpson- for-Coach movement. A letter to this department from a stu dent at the university says the Simpson-for-Coach movement is gaining considerable momentum on the campus.
