1000 Times More
Than Ever
The first Thanksgiving
decreed by Governor Bradford
in 1623 celebrated the sur
vival of a minority. Unknow
ingly, it also marked the birth
of a nation made up of minor
ities the Puritans of Massa
chusetts, the burghers of New
York, the cavaliers of Virginia,
the Indians of a vast frontier.
None, mark you, liked
another. With a trait common
to minorities, each felt itself
a cut above the rest. Yet the
history of three centuries shows
that when these minorities did
get together and founded the
greatest, freest, happiest nation
of all time, the old animosities
somehow vanished.
Our history since the first
Thanksgiving shows that the
growth of this democracy has
been paralleled by the growth
of tolerance. Not only has the
majority come to understand
better the views and problems
of the minorities, but the mi
norities have come nearer to
appreciating the common de
nominators that make for ma
jorities. Through three centuries the
motto of this country has been
"United we stand. But the
fact has remained, sometimes
through bitter tests : "We stand
united!"
Now, 1000 times more than
ever, the land we have inherited
from early Americans of all
faiths, colors, and conditions
is made up of minorities on
whose survival its future de
pends. Yet, 1000 times more
than ever, history should con
vince majorities and minorities
alike that no conflict can sur
vive the American tradition of
mutual tolerance. That's reason
for another Thanksgiving and
it's the history of America.

warning issued today by Mrs.
Leonard Carpenter, chairman of
the Red Cross camp and hos

gift project. "The response of
individuals and clubs has been
wonderful so far. We plan to
take care of the patients in
Camp White hospital first, but
hope we will have hundreds of
gifts for the army and navy
men on shipboard."
The gifts are- to be taken to
the courthouse auditorium Fri

where they will be wrapped and
packaged for shipment. Mrs.
Kenneth Parrett, whose hus

from navy duty, has scheduled
volunteers from the American

The auditorium will be open

Posters Made
Mrs. Edna Halvorson, whose
husband is a major In the ma

colorful posters seen in many
shops which are displaying suit
able gifts for servicemen, the
poster project being under the
supervision of Miss Nancy Day,
new entertainment chairman of
the Grey Ladies. Mrs. O. A.
Eden has shopped for ribbon
and paper for wrapping.
Mrs. Paul Skinner, publicity
chairman for the Red Cross,
whose husband is an army of
ficer in Tokyo, planned all radio
skits, news articles and window
displays for the project. "Men
away from home are lonely on
Christmas Day," she reminds lo

Christmas to be a remembered
one for every serviceman, don't
