1 TRY 42 GERMANS II P Wrangle Opens Hearing In Alleged Wholesale Cruel ties, Fatal Experiments. Dachau, Nov. 15 CU.PJ Forty two Germans went on trial be fore a U. S. military government court today on charges of murd ering thousands of persons at the notorious Dachau concentration camp by torture, starvation and sadistic experiments. The Dachau atrocity trial opened with a legal wrangle in which defense counsel chal lenged the court's jurisdiction and the way in which the charges were drawn up. Wholesale Cruelties The Nazi defendants were ac cused of wholesale cruelties, mistreatment, beatings and fatal experiments involving Allied war prisoners and civilians at Dachau. One of the leading defendants was Dr. Klaus Karl Schilling, whose malaria experiments were alleged to have killed 1,100 to 3,000 persons. Another defendant was Dr. Fritz Hintermayer, accused of murdering 000 persons and driv- CERTIFIED ACCORDION STUDIO 121 i W. Main Ph. 2755 frig another 1,000 Insane with his various experiments on "human guinea pigs." The trial was being held in a refurnished workshop on the grounds of the concentration camp. NIlTHlCIS TO RETAIN POST Oakland, Cal., Nov. IS U. Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, mentioned as a possible succes sor to Adm. Ernest J. King as commander in chief of the U. S. fleet, said today he expected to retain his Pacific command and hoped that "one of these days, I'll have enough points to get out." The white-haired admiral who directed naval operations against the Japanese throughout , the Pacific war, arrived here from Honolulu en route to Washing ton, D. C, where he said he would be on "temporary duty" before returning to the Pacific. He referred to the outbreak of rioting between navy personnel and "gook" hoodlums in Hono lulu as "a local incident" and declined to comment on reports by navy officers that Honolulu police were lax in maintaining order until a complete investi gation has been made. Uality yctM Schilling: VACUUM PACKED COFFEE CE ARENA OPENS FRIDAY NIGHT FOR Grand opening of the Medfcrd Ice Arena, 619 South Grape street, will take place Friday at 7:45 p. m., Denny Edge, general manager, announced today. Skat ing sessions will be held each night with the exception of Mon day, and matinee skating will take place Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Edge also announced that Danny Stewart, who opened the rink with Edge in 1942, and who has been connected with him in the ice arena business for the past IS years, will serve as rink manager during the season. He Is one of the outstanding ice makers on the coast, according to Edge. Recently discharged flight of ficer. Bill Fredrick of Medford, is to be in charge of the rink's skate shop. Plans for an ice show, made up of local talent and members of the Eugene Figure Skating club, to be held sometime in early December, are also being made, Edge said. Edge, who handled the Oak land Hockey club the past sea son, set a league record in the southern conference by winning 14 games out of 17 played. His daughter, Ruth, is now in Chi cago as a member of the famed Ice Follies. Illustrious Potentate Sam Steinbaugh of Grants Pass has named Kennelt P. Lawrence of Coquille as gen eral chairman in charge of ar rangements and Garnet A. Nunn of Grants Pass will be ceremon ial director. This will be the third cere monial in 1945 and a large class of candidates will be' initiated. Registration will be at 2 p. m. at the Coquille hotel, a business session is set for 4 p. m. and a social hour for 5 o'clock. A sea food banquet will begin at 6 o'clock, a parade Is scheduled for 7 p. m a band concert and patrol maneuvers for 7:30 p. m. and a reception for 8 p. m. A Dutch lunch will follov the initiation ceremonies. Birth and Death Follow Collision Of Car and Train Punxsutawney, Pa., Nov. 15 (U.B The collision of an auto mobile with a speeding freight train produced a tragedy in which a mother gave birth to a son on a railway embankment while her oldest daughter died screaming in the twisted wreck age of the burning car. The car, driven by the husband, crashed into a freight train at a grade crossing.
