THE SEDUCTIONS Finrv dav the mail brines ar peals from people who hope I will suggest a sedative to suit their require ments or at least give them my as surance that the seda 1 1 V e they are con templating or already in the habit of using "oecasionall y." is safe. No can do. Even the Dr. Brady mildest or least dangerous drug or drugs in that class is reasonably safe only in the hands of your own physician. A nerve sedative or even a hypnotic (sleep producing medi cine of one kind or another is the right medicine in some cir cumstances and it is a blessing that we have such medicines or drugs. But the use of such drugs or medicines by any one other than a physician is an evil of which the American people and the venal Uncle Sam should be ashamed. ' To the individual who thinks he or she needs a sedative I say this: Don't take the first dose of such medicine on your own responsibility. If you do, you may never come back. I do not mean that the single dose will necessarily prove fatal. I mean that once you have weak ened enough to take one dose, you will resort to the drug the more readily the next time the occasion or temptation arises. And even if a single indulgence does no serious damage, it is foolhardy to imagine you can indulge repeatedly with impun ity. I hope no one will sniff at this as an attempt to exaggerate the danger of self-medication with such drugs. I recall the case of, believe it or not, my friend the druggist, who should have known better but didn't. He felt off his feed one evening and took a few doses of a nostrum that benumbs sense of pain or distress, "settles" stomach, "quiets" the nervousness come to think of it, the nostrum (dis guised acetanilide) worked four ways in this instance, for it stopped the druggist's breathing along toward midnight. Even if so-called nerve seda tives were safe to take at all on your own responsibility or for just a few weeks or months with the approval of a compliant physician, there is still this fact which we cannot lose sight of that no medicine of the seda tive class, from bromide to bar biturate, has any definite reme dial value in illness or weakness or strain or run down condition or overwork. To compromise with this' fact is to invite In validism, neurotic invalidism. Aside from the direct injury any such drug or medicine is likely to work upon blood, heart or other organs or tissues, there is the indirect injury the patient suffers from resorting to seda tives while so temporizing nothing is done in the effort to find out what ails the patients and to correct, remove or at least treat the actual trouble. U.R) The nation's housing problems won't be solved for at least five years, and perhaps not for 10, accord ing to a Pennsylvania State Col lege professor. E. L. Whitaker, associate pro fessor of architecture, claims the nation already has a backlog of about two million dwelling units which have to be built. "Add to that the regular need of nearly 800.000 new units each year, the present lack of lum ber, and the homeless, migratory war workers who will take a while to settle down, and you can see why it will take a good five years, he says. Prof. Whitaker believes that manv veterans will be unwill' g to return to their prewar dwell ings, and he feels that many war workers have grown accustom ed to a higher standard of living and will want better homes. The cost of building or buying is still up 20 to 30 per cent from the prewar level, and is likely to stay there for the next year or vear and a half, Prof. Whitak er points out. He doubts whether costs ever will return to ineir old level. Court House News Divorce Complaints Marv Emmons vs. James R. Emmons. Betty Clevengcr vs. Walter F. Clevencer.
