Advent Christian Evangelist Gives Prophecy Talks Special services, featuring the "truth as it is in Jesus," are being held at the Advent Christ ian Church, corner of Jackson and Welch streets. According to a church spokes man, some of the discussions will cover "the prophecy-fulfilling events of these days, especially as they pertain to the greatest event of all time: the return of Jesus, the Son of God, and the establishment of a kingdom of peace, universal and incorrupti ble." According to the evangelist, F. B. Eastman, of Spokane, Wash., the facts to be advanced will prove that there is no help in man, no hope in human insti tutions, some of which have al ready outlived their day; that all existing human organizations have failed, and that there is hope only in the God of heaven, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, the predetermined King of kings and Lord of lords. Services are held each eve ning at 7:30, and the church ex tends a cordial welcome to all. Red Cross Parcels Hoarded By Yamashita Says Witness Manila, Nov. 9 CU.PJ An affidavit charged Gen. Tomo yuki Yamashita today with hoarding thousands of American Red Cross food parcels in his luxurious home while American civilians were dying by the scores in nearby Santo Tomas Internment camp. The sworn statement of Maj. Ralph Scheldley of Cleveland, O., directly linked Yamashita to the systematic starvation of the Santo Tomas inmates and was admitted in evidence at his trial only over the vigorous pro tests of his counsel. Other witnesses testified the Japanese tortured and murdered 25.000 civilian men, women and children in Batangas province last Feb. 15. A survivor said the Japanese tied 300 men by fives and forced them at bayonet point to leap into a huge well. Only seven emerged alive. Scheidley's statement was for warded to Manila from Crile general hospital in Cleveland, where he is under treatment. He said he was detailed to clean Yamashita's "large, many-roomed house" in Manila following the American liberation of the capital. Red Cross parcels were stack ed to the ceilings in the house, the affidavit said. Cigarets had been stolen from some and "less desirable Items" were strewn on the floor, he said. Elvessa Stewart, an American horns economics teacher who has lived in the Philippines since 1913, testified that she and other Santo Tomas Internees in Octo ber 1944 were receiving only 1.387 calories In food per day and later this was reduced to a mere 500. "The human body needs 3,000 to exist," she said. Miss Stewart, a graduate of the University of Nebraska, amazed the court with her com plete records of foods and their values served at the internment camp. Even Yamashita leaned forward and listened intently. ATOMIC RESULTS El Paso, Tex., Nov. 9 (U.R) An El Paso banker said today that the test explosion of the atomic bomb In New Mexico last July gave some of his cattle gray hair. C. M. Harvey owns a ranch 60 miles from the site of the bemb test. MINE SINKS SHIP Hong Kong, Nov. 9 (U.R) More than 1,500 Chinese eighth army soldiers died when their ship struck a mine and sank yes terday en route to Hong Kong from Canton, it was announced today. America To Be Speaker Here Elder F. H. Westphal, who will preach tomorrow in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, at 11 a. m. on "The Secret of Defeat or Success in Christian Living," was one of the church pioneers in South America, spending 28 years in that field. When he went there In 1901, there were only about 1000 Seventh-day Adventists in the entire continent, the only two institutions consisting of two small schools. He has seen the work grow till now there are upwards of 35,000 members, two large publishing houses, eight training schools, where young men receive training for the min istry and as teachers, as also for the several other lines of de nominational activities. One of the strongest lines of activity, is the medical missionary work, the church having quite a num ber of hospitals, sanitariums, and dispensaries, in that needy field. In all this work, Elder Westphal took a leading part. Thought in his 85th year, he is still quite hale, and an interesting speaker. GRANTS PASS PLANS PARKING METER USE Grants Pass, Nov. 9 "The city council has definitely de cided to go on record favoring the installation of parking meters in Grants Pass," Mayor J. A. Wharton stated at the city council meeting Wednesday eve ning.
