A win will clinch the Southern Oregon conference championship for the Yiace with two wins and no de-t feats, if Asniand snould win, the league would end in a tie. The Grizzlies currently have won one and lost one. Grants Pass Is now tied with Klamath Falls for the cellar spot,' each having 'Won one and lost two, Al Simpson's gang will out weigh Ashland about 22 pounds to the man for the annual tilt. Medford's line will tip the scales at 182 pounds average while the Grizzly forward wall will average 158. Medford's backfield figures out 184 pounds while the Ashland backs average 165. It will be a case of the T-for-mation against the double wing when the two bitter rivals get together. Ashland's offense, wnue not carrying much weight for power plays, is tricky and their forward pass attack is something to watch when it is clicking. From now on out thp rhln. nra down as far as Medford is con cerned. If the Tornado loses to night they will hang up their suits and start basketball prac tice Monday. If they win, how ever, they will open negotiations With North Rpnri fnr n r,lavnff game next week to determine me district champion. North Bend meets powerless Coos Bay tonight and also must win to be in consideration for the play-off. BREAD IS AT ITS BEST WHEN ITS IS AT ITS BEST BREAD WHEN TSlKolHiK$'?tC4A. Middlecoff, a 24-year-old army lieutenant, was expected to play today and was made a favorite along with Denny Shute of Akron, O., and Ben Hogan, Her shey. Pa., professionals who fin ished second and third at Pine hurst yesterday. Consistently accurate putting gave Middlecoff, a Memphis re sident, his 280 score eight un der par and five better than Shute, who carded a 70-75 for the final 38 holes. Middlecoff made the morning 18 holes in 69 for his third straight sub-par round, and then had a par 72 in the afternoon. He had one eagle and three birdies. Hogan carried a final-day 73 73 for a 286 total and third pltce. ' Although Middlecoff won tne tournament, Shute won the money. As an amateur the Mem phis dentist could accept only $100 in war bonds. Evangelist G. B. Shelburne Jr. of Abilene, Texas, is preaching The Church where you are always welcome. Regular Services Sunday, 10:30 A. M., and 7:30 P. M. Wednesday, 7:30 P.M. A Cordial Invitation Is Extended to All Meeting Will Close Sunday Night Sport Chips BY Harry Chipman Mail Tribut.e Sports Editor Gaels Eye Bowl Contest San Francisco, Nov. 9 W.R) The galloping Gaels of St. Mary's, only unbeaten college football team on the west coast, were a good bet today to execute a neat reverse and go east for a Sugar Bowl game date on New Year's day. It is the usual order of things for a standout football team to come from the south or the east to play the west coast represen tative in the annual Rose Bowl classic at Pasadena, Cal. But because St. Mary's isn't a mem ber of the Pacific conference, the Gaels are ruled out as the host team. And that doesn't make the sponsors of some of the other bowl games unhappy. Reported ly under consideration by com mittees arranging the Sugar, Orange, and Cotton bowl clas sics, the team is almost a cinch to go to one of them if it com pletes its schedule without a loss. And because the Sugar Bowl has a pleasant precedent for in viting a west coast team to Its classic, St. Mary's is figured to have the inside track for that game, regardless of what team may be its opponent. If the St. Mary's youngsters finish their schedule without a loss and go to a bowl game, Coach Jimmy Phelan will have to credit the Hawaiian islands with a big assist. That is because the Pacific paradise produced his brilliant backfield duo of Her man Wedemeyer and Charles (Spike) Cordeiro, the pair which sparked the team to its upset victory, 26 to 0, over Southern California. Army, Michigan Seen As Winners Of Nation's Big Grid Clashes Saturday Steelhead are taking eggs In deep holes with best fishing be ing reported down stream below Grants Pass, according to Al Piche in his weekly dope sheet. A few silverside, of the early winter run, have been caught on size five and six spinners at Gold Ray Dam. The fish are in fine shape and will continue to take spinners up to the lat ter part of January, Piche says. Salmon fishing at the mouth of the Chetco river is reported as good with fish being of aver age size. Duck and goose hunting have been giving sportsmen a good time and those who have been to the Klamalh county hunting grounds claim shoot ing Is exceptionally good. Since loads of heavy shot, such as two and larger, cannot be purchased, many hunters are btivintf air rifl shot hv the ! pound and refilling shells by j hand. i Factory reports on shells are to the effect that quotas from now to the end of the year to ' jobbers, merchants and hunters , will be doubled, Piche claims. Come io think of It, Medford has the kind of team which should challenge an astern prep eleven for the mythical national title. Were Paul Brown still coaching those gigantic prep teams at Maisll ion, Ohio, as he used io do before stepping up to boss the Ohio Staters, a game for Med ford with an outfit such as that would be a natural ... The mighty Medford's, the best lpoking high school team we've ever seen and we've seen some dandies during our stretch in California should do it up brown this year and go all the way. Jerry Acklen in Grants Pass Couriers An Associated Press dispatch from Klamath Falls says that Klamath Falls was on record as being in favor of any move that would bring further gridiron glory to the great Medford team of 1945. Hale Scarbrough, sports edi tor of the Klamath Falls Herald and News, suggested that the Medford team be sent to Soldier's Field in Chicago, to play the champion of the tough Chicago interscholastle league, and offer ed the opinion that the Tornado would bring high honors to Western prep football in such a scrap. The Klamath Falls Quarter back club backed this up with a resolution giving moral support to the suggested Chicago game idea or any other plan for a match that would give the Tor nado a chance to win intcrsec tional honors, according to the AP story. We submit a suggestion mad by the Courier's editor who would like io see the Medford team be the Coast selection for the Rose Bowl game at Pasadena. Of course, the Pacific Coast Conference has this pretty well sewed up, but they might make an ex ception this year. We want io see Souther i Oregon gat a chance to show the rest of the country what a great team we have at Medford. Lest someone else beat us to the remark, we hasten to say that our challenges to other teams to meet Medford might be thought of as a "hold your coat" suggestion on our part, but we figure the Black Tor nado has achieved some sort of a pinnacle in its two undefeat ed seasons and should be given national recognition. MARTINELLI TOPS IN BATTLE ROM Angelo Martlnclll wrestled and slugged his way to a two-straight-fall victory over Jack Lipscomb to come out best man in the battle royal at Medford armory last night. Rough Rufus Jones, the De troit Negro, was the first man eliminated and was paid only traveling expenses. Jones didn't have a chance as the other six grapplers Jumped on him and gave him a terrific pummeling. Next out was Bulldog Jack-1 son, followed by Ernie Piluso, Gorilla Poggi and Harold (Blood j and Guts) Davidson. After Piluso 1 was eliminated he returned to the ring three times to aid Mar-; tinelli against Davidson and Lipscomb. In the ensuing matches, pair ings determined by elimination in the battle royal, Jackson and ; Piluso went to a three round draw, Davidson took two straight falls over Poggi in the middle match and Martinelll won from i Lipscomb In the main event. ' Martinelli's second fall came on a foul when Lipscomb pinned him in the ropes and wouldn't let Referee Wally Moss free him. Nearly 2,500 fans jammed the armory to witness the best card of the year. V1CKSYATROHQL Bruce Myers in Corvallls Gaiette-Timesi Medford Is toying with the proposal that the Tornado get a post-season game with the Chi cago city champions, and we don't doubt but that the red-hot Rogue River fans would OK the idea, providing finances and ap proval of the state high school athletic association are forth-1 coming. Medford also might j take up the Spokane Athletic ; Round Tables challenge for all comers against Gonzaga high school In Spokane. Fred Zimmerman in Salem Capital-Journal: In spite of their overwhelm- ing defeat of Bend last Friday night, Medford high's "Black Tornado" was not hitting on ' all cylinders, judging by in sinuations carried in the Mail Tribune. The writer accused j the players of some rather sloppy tackling and reading of too many flowery press notices. ' Gosh, aren't some 70-odd points enough to run up against out-classed opposition! We have noticed In every write-up con cerning Medford's games thai the southern Oregon champs take full advantage of every break In the contest. Evidently they are excellent ball hawks for a loose pigskin usually comes up In the hands of a Med ford player. Ability to capital ize on the breaks has brought the "Black Tornado" a number of touchdowns this season.
