TONSILS A doctor who specializes in eye, ear, nose and throat advises me that the electric method is not for me as I have an ar thritis condi tion. He says that the elec tric method would force a the poison from my ton sils into my system at each treatment, thus making the ar thritis worse, and hence I Dr. Brady must have complete tonsillecto my in the hospital . (Miss F. M.) One thing your quaint all around "specialist" probably did not tell you is that the patient can walk home or back to his or her usual work or play after a diathermy (electro-coagulatiorO treatment and generally doesn't miss a meal during the course of the treatment. After the old Spanish atrocity, however, there is always a chance that the late patient may ride back home in a beautiful container. It is precisely in such cases as your, Madam, that the dia thermy (electro-coa g u 1 a 1 1 o n) method of treatine infprfpH inn. sils should be chosen. In the hands of a physician who has received technical instruction from a physician skilled in the method and that does not mean every doctor who attempts electro-coagulation after a half hour of instruction by the salesman who sells the machine this modern humane treatment is less likely to "force the poison from the tonsil into the blood" than is the crude guillotine and snare mctnod. Dissecting, cutting, snar ing inevitably opens up lymph channels and carjillnrv snaepe through which germs or their toxins may De arjsorbed into the blood stream. - Electro-coagulation sterilizes and seals such Murder Will Out ABC. 10:00 p m. Your doctor, Madam, betrayed his ignorance or bias. Any doctor who so advises a patient today is ignorant or biased. The mortality of surgical ton sillectomy is indeed so great that any doctor should hesitate to ad vise it in any circumstance even when there is no alterna tive. But to condemn the method as this benighted "specialist" does is well, I can't print what I think about it. Even if surgical tonsillectomy took no lives at all, there is precious little real evidence of its value and this is not just my narrow view of the question, but a fair assay of the concensus of medical opinion. If you are old enough you will remember that tonsillectomy was a veritable rage thirty or forty years ago. That was before the public re ceived anything like a fair deal In health instruction. Not that I believe my own blah-blah has had any great educational influ ence', but it is significant that the more the people learn about health and illness the fewer oper ations, major operations for re moval of tonsils, do the eager surgeons "perform".
