BLACKHEADS AND PIMPLES Young people normally or naturally have rather oily skin and scalp and therefore should avoid poma des, hair oil, creams and other cosmct- tics containing oil. The natur al skin oil (called sebum) is the best of all cosmetics, if you still have the youth to insure a suf ficient supply Brady - for your skin, complexion, scalp and hair. If you're a little too old or prema turely old, then you'll have to fall back on artificial skin oil of one kind or another to keep up the illusion or delusion of youth as long as you can. For the older folk whose skin and hair are becoming to be a bit dry, dull and less beautiful some skin or scalp oil is prob ably needed. For young persons the use of any such cosmetic simply invites trouble and spoils or conceals any beauty the com prexion may have. A reasonable amount of black heads and pimples (medically called acne) should be regarded as natural in the middle 'teens and in a good many instances the affliction, as the boy or girl who has it is likely to call it, is good for the youngster. Just as a reasonable amount of fleas may keep the dog from worry ing about the fact that he is a dog, so blackheads and pimples keep the boy or girl from be coming too pert or conceited about the fact that he or she is a youth. The cause of blackheads and pimples is pretty much a matter for speculation, aside from the observation already made that the activity of the sebaceous glands in the skin is greatest at puberty (age 12 to 19 years) when sexual maturity is reach ed. . In my opinion there is no scientific ground for the quaint notion, Still seriously set forth by some doctors, that too much butter, French fried food, pork, gravy, milk, cream and other foods containing considerable oil or fat, has something to do with excessive secretion sebum (skin oil). Another bit of twaddle seri ously set forth by some doctors who pretend to know what to the rest of us is clearly a ques tion of opinion, is that the use of iodized salt may cause acne, This theory is neatly propagated by the one-man health magazine in an article by a non-medical author whose suggestions are "medically approved", as the slick magazine editor says. The non-medical author says many a patient has "had his acne great ly improved simply by substi tuting plain salt for iodized salt in the family cooking." Consid ering there is less than half a grain of iodine in a whole pound of iodized salt and about as much in a pound of canned sal mon, tuna or shrimp or in a dozen oysters, the notion that the trace of iodine in iodized salt can cause acne or any other trouble in a person not subject to allergy or idiosyncrasy for Dr. !Pepri-Cola Cvmvmy, ton; tiland Cilii, N. QUESTIONS ft ANSWERS Tapeworm I have read your column for a long time but have never seen any remedy for tapeworm. (E. C. H.l Answer 1 know of no remedy one with tapeworm can take safer? with out medical care.
