TWO -MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE ROSEBURG 33-14 Ashland, Nov. 3 Scoring once in the first quarter, twice in the second, once in the third and again in the fourth period, Ashland Grizzlies handed Itoso burg a 33 to 14 setback here Fri day night. The Indians' two tal lies came in the last part of the final stania when Ashland's line up was made up mostly of third and fourth stringers. The game was the last on the Ashland home slate. They play Medford there next Friday and Coquille there Nov. 17. Nor. 4, 1945 BEND SMOTHERED BENEATH TORNADO SCORING BARRAGE Medford Scores First Touch down 45 Seconds After Game Starts; Final 78-0 It was good Lava Bear hunt ing for the Medford high school football team at Medford sta dium last night as they polished off Bend by a 78 0 score in the annual classic between the two schools. It took the Black Tornado just 45 seconds to cross the goal line after the game got under way. Bergstrath, Bend tackle, kicked off to Jerry Clark on the Medford 21 and Dazzlin' Jerry trotted it back to the 31. On the first play Bob Watson went wide around his own left end and streaked into the end zone for the first of a dozen touch downs. Watson's kick was good and Medford was out in front 7-0 before the fans were com fortably seated. Cava Takes Past Bend took the ensuing kick off and on third down had a pass intercepted by Jim Cave who was downed on the Bend 30. On the next play Jerry Boss faded back and tossed a pass to Al Kircher who caught It on the three and stepped the re maining distance for another touchdown. Watson's attempted placckick was no good and the Tornado led Jd-u. After taking the kickoff, Bend was forced to kick on fourth rtnwn the ball going out of bounds on the Medford 34. It took Medford six plays before Watson skirted left end and he fell into the end zone as he was tackled. His placekick was good and the Tornado enjoyed a 20-0 bulge. Four plays failed to gain any appreciable yardage for the Lava Bears and they kicked on fourth down, the ball going out of bounds on the Medford 38 yard marker. On the first play Ross' pass was intercepted by Falwell but Bend's offense was short-lived for the Bears Junim- ed three plays later and Clark recovered - for Medford. Bost- wlck, on a lateral to Watson, put the ball into play ob the Medford 49 and the plowing fullback moved It to the visit or's 30. On the next play Wat son scooted to tne one ana Clark carried it over from there. The try for point was low and Medford was out in front 26 0 when the first quarter ended. Greene, Tingley Team Up Nick Greene and Glenn Ting- ley started the second period by tossing Maudlin for a seven yard loss and the Bears dropped another seven on second down. Jones kicked for the Bears, the ball going out of bounds on the Bend 26. Enrl Stelle picked up five yards and Bill Singler, be ing chased by a multitude of Bears, dashed into the end zone. With Slnglcr holding, Watson kicked the extra point to put the defending stato champs in front by a 33 0 score. FEAR-PROOF RECAPPING TIRE EXCHANGE of Medford reserves entered the game and finished out the quar ter but not before Earl Stelle smashed across from the one yard line to put Medford ahead 39-0 at the half. Clark Scorn Whillock kicked off to start the second half but the Bears were forced to punt on fourth down. Bostwick picked up two yards and Watson added 23 to move the oval to the Bend 10 yard line from where Clark hit pay dirt and Watson added the extra point for a 46-0 lead. Greene set up the next touch' down when he recovered Bend fumble and a pass from Ross to Watson paid off but the try for point was missed. Bost wick took Jones' punt on the Bend 44 and returned it for touchdown and Watson's kick was good for a 59-0 lead at end of the third period, Ross tossed a pass to Singler to score on the first play of the final period and pass from Stelle to Singler was good for the extra point. Lloyd Carr reached scoring territory short ly Bfter for a 72-0 edge. Singler added the final touchdown near the end of the game when he went through left tackle from two yards out. MARY'S HANDS GET TIE Los Angeles, Nov. 3 (U.R) A lightning-fast and amazingly tricky St. Mary s college football team trampled the University of Southern California into the turf today,. 26-0, before 75,000 stun ned fans at the Los Angeles Me' morial coliseum. As in each of St. Mary's five previous victories, it was the sensational Hawaiian duo of Her man Wedcmeyer and Spike Cor delro, a pair of versatile and vir tually unstoppable backs, who paced the youthful northern team to its one-sided drubbing of the three-point underdogs. Despite a lineup consisting mostly of 17-year-olds, the visi tors completely outplayed the heavier Southern California line, and disregarding a 95-degrcc sun, pushed their opponents all over the field. St. Mary's amass ed tremendous yardage while bottling up Southern California. Only for a brief moment at the end of the first half when South ern California almost matched St. Mary's touchdown, did it ap pear as though it might be a ball game. However, before the third per iod was very many minutes old. the tide turned and stayed that way. Denny O Connor, St. Mary s quarterback, confused the Southern Californians with an amazing assortment of plays and the Trojan eleven contribut ed greatly by fumbling and con tinuously throwing passes Into the waiting arms of the St. Mary's defenders. Berkeley, Oil., Nov. 3 (U.R) An underdog Washington State college football team, outplayed for three quarters, engineered one touchdown play In the clos ing minutes for a 7 to 7 tie with University of California today before 35,000 fans. . Trailing wtih only six minutes to play, the Cougars came back when Dean Eggcrs, 180-pound quartcrbnek, faded back to the California 45 yard line and toss ed a "blooper" pass to Bill Lip pincott on the 15 for a quick scor ing thrust. Darroll Waller kicked the tying point. That was the only time that Coach Phil Sorboe'a club threat- ! ened the Bear goal. It was the first time WSC had driven in i side the California 35. SQUEEZE OUT 7-0 Portland, Ore., Nov. 3 U.R) Washington's Huskies barely squeezed past an underdog University of Oregon team to day, 7 to 0, to keep in the run ning for a Rose Bowl bid. A sell-out crowd of 30,000 saw Washington pile up 12 first downs to keep Oregon In hot water most of the game. When it came to the scoring punch, Washington bogged down re peatedly but eventually capital ized on a recovered fumble to set up a touchdown in the final period. A slippery ball and muddy field gummed up play for both teams. Finally it was Washing ton with the ball only 20 yards out for what proved to be the winning touchdown drive. Vick cry scooped up the ball on Weber's fumble, from where Stacy ran 10 yards to the 10 and Hungar plowed to the 4. Then it was Hungar again to the one foot line and" quarter back Joe Stone slipped over from T-formation for six points. Wally Dash whose fake place kick touchdown pass knocked southern California out of the Rose Bowl spotlight a week ago converted perfectly. Jake Leicht, who sparkled for 60 minutes In the Oregon backficld, almost connected with his long passes In the closing seconds. It was Talent's 23rd consecutive win. The Bulldogs had , to come from behind as Phoenix scored on the first play of the game when a long pnss was good for touchdown. The try for point was good and the visitors led 8-0. Talent evened things up, however, by scoring as soon as they got their hands on the ball. Halftime score was 27-8. STATE T 34 TO 0, Corvallis, Ore., Nov. 3 (U.R) An alert Oregon State college football team passed and bucked its way to a 34 to 0 victory over the University of Idaho before a crowd of 5,000 on Bell field here today. After a scoreless first quarter, during which neither team was able to make consistent gains. OSC opened up with a passing barrage, which, combined with occasional thrusts through the line, netted two touchdowns each of the second and third quarters and one in the final period. All but one of the Oregon State scores came either directly or indirectly from Idaho fumbles, pass interceptions or blocked kicks. The one exception was a bril liant 70-yard run by Fullback Garth Rouse of North Holly wood, Calif., who, late In the second period, slipped through right tackle and behind good interference went the full dis tance to the goal. Oregon State uncorked the best passing attack it has shown this year with two forwards accounting for touch downs -and one other score being set up through the air. The Staters completed 11 of 27 passes for a total 204 yards and chalked up 206 yards on scrimmage plays for a total of 410 yards. On the other hand, Idaho found it almost as tough going through the air as on the ground, although the Vandals completed seven out of 15 pass attempts for 62 yards. They found it impos sible, however, to make progress through the rugged OSC line, netting only nine yards from scrimmage. OSC tallied 12 first downs to four for Idaho.
