EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL-TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care Br OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Reader! should addreit Inquiries toi Or. William Brady 26S El Camino. Brrerly HilU. Calll. SCIENTIFIC NEGLECT I hope, my dear children, that you have by now got the antisep tic nonsense out of your heads. Lest you still Imagine the ap plication of an tiseptlc lo tions, salves and the like promoted heal ing of a wound, It may be well to state here a few s p e c 1 fic facts which no p h y a 1 clan or s u r g e on will have the tem Brady erity to dispute, In the opinion of the one-horse-and-buggy doc tor who conducts this column. If any physician or surgeon of standing is In any doubt at all about tliis I'll be grateful for his or her view and of course I'll make no allusion to what such a colleague may say to me about it without first submitting any thing I propose to say here for his or her approval. One fundamental principle of good surgery and good home treatment of wounds of any de gree is difficult for the ordinary layman, the practical nurse and the well-meaning but untrained neighbor or by-standcr to learn: scientific neglect. Probably you won't believe It but having talked myself into this awkward situation I may as well make the best of it and say that, as nearly as I can learn (and don't forget I'm a plodding old horse-and-buggy doctor), once a wound, surgical or traumatic (ac cidental) is clean, free from disease-producing germs, It will heal best if not disturbed or tam pered with for a week, more or Jess. That Is only one part or fea ture of scientific neglect. Don't handle, tamper with, put "heal ing" salves or lotions on, or change the first aid dressing of the wound for several days, un less some complication arises and then leave it to the judgment of the doctor. This scientific neglect does not mean that the wound should not have rest, whether that Involves rest of the entire body or rest of the part injured, as in splints. Often the use of adhesive plaster straps or collodion gives this do slrable rest to a wound or sore or f IsBure, as of the face or about the mouth, Even If the dressing used on the wound be surgically sterile and the doctor or nurse trained in surgical asepsis, the merest disturbance of the Injured tis sues must be reckoned a setback to the healing process. That Is the reason why, after a delicate skin grafting operation, for in stance, the original dressing is left undisturbed for a week or more. Proper treatment for pain, burning, smarting, feeling of ten sion or throbbing in a wound Is strictly a problem for the phy sician and should never be left to the judgment of any one other than the physician. In all ordinary circumstances, If a physician is not available, the safest course is a single appli cation of Mild Tincture of Iodine U. S. P. (best poured on from the vial), and then a covering with any freshly Ironed cloth or a pad of sterile gauze (incorrectly call ed "medicated" cotton) which may be held In place with band age, adhesive plustcr straps or gentle pressure with fingers or hand until bleeding stops or a physlclp.n can treat the wound.
