HOW IN THE WORLD C Several years ago when I had a little set-to with a metropoli tan health commissioner over the questtion of r a b i e s in man, the com missioner pre pared and pub lished in the newspapers a signed state ment declar ing, among other things, that "fuming nitric acid is the only thing Dr. Brady that will de stroy the virus". No one has identified rabies virus from the great Pasteur dowu to the Squedunk dog catcher rabies vims, if it exists, has eluded scientific investiga tors. That being true I ask how In the world can the doctors tell whether pure phenol, fuming nitric acid or any other cauter izing or tissue-destroying sub stance destroys it? Incidentally, if rabies ever does occur in man (I do not believe It does), when the hypothetical "virus" or "germ" is inoculated by the bite or scratch inflicted by an animal that has rabies how do the doc tors know that cauterizing the wound with fuming nitric acid, cure liquefied phenol ("carbolic acid") or other tissue-destroying agent will not supply dead or injured tissue debris to the virus or germ of the disease to grow on? We know that the least bit of dead or injured tissue left in a wound favors development of lockjaw (tetanus) if the tooth, talon, rlaw beak or nail Inflict fng the wound happened to im plant tetanus germs in the wound, just as fon-ign particles or material of any kind left bur ied in the flesh gun powder, wadding, bits of cloth favor de velopment of tetanus. Lest the reader misunder stand here Is my own belief about rabies ("hydrophobia"): 1. I believe rabies occurs in domestic and wild animals. 2. I doubt that the disease oc curs in man. 3. If I were bitten or otherwise- wounded by an ani mal, fowl or person pre sumed to have rabies ("hydrophobia") I'd have no Pasteur treatment, be cause I fear the effects of that more than I fear the possibility of rabies. 4. - The treatment I'd want for any such site or wound, whether the animal, f&wl or person inflicting the wound were presumed ra bid or not, is simply the proper aseptic surgical tieatment a good doctor m "She may be old, but the still hat plenty of pep!" Talking about the car, we think. Probably been getting regu lar price for it from a Plymouth, Dodge, De Soto or Chrysler dealer. You'll be wise to do likewise. It wpuld be a matter of no concern whatever, to me, whether the animal, fowl o- person Inflicting the wound might escape, be apprehended, be killed, or develop alleged rabies. As long as my wound received j proper surgical care and I ; received the protection against tetanus, I'd forget the incident. That's all. But please take notice, I tell you what I'd do or want done about It if I were the patient concerned. In no circumstances will I advice any one what he or she should do about treatment of such bite or wound or the pos sibility of rabies. The only sug gestion I offer in such circum stances Is this: Follow your physician's advice. QUESTIONS A ANSWERS Insulin Reaction T do not arcee with J. K.
