The parent is vague or careless about the identity of the - doctor no telling from the letter whether me doctor gave the child the first aid treatment and the treatment In the hospital, or uerhaos a second doctor horned in and took charge In that ethical way doctors who hang around hospitals or hold "staff positions do when such a case comes in. I know. I served as a physician on the staff of a hos pital for years. It's a nice rack et If sou can wangle a place on the staff. Not so nice for those who practice on their own. The doctor at the hospital told the child's parent the child had "carbolic gangrene" and that It was caused by the (careful, now. Brady, you'll stir up a veritable hornet s nest if you Just presume the trade name for the product Is no 'onger private property) well, we'll call It the Saponat rd Solution of Cresol or Solution of Cresol with Soap, which had been used as an ' antiseptic" in the dressings. The parent says they changed doctors and the fecond doctor (ah, then, the first doctor talked himself out of the picture, ah?) amputated at once, where the gangrene was. The first doctor had been waiting for the gangrene to stop. Does gangrene stop' (Signed ...) I (TJrady) imagine the first doctor had discontinued use of the cresol and was waiting to LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF FINAL HEARING In the County Court of the State of Oregon for Jackson County, tn the Mutter of the Estate of EDMUND PE1LE, Deceased. I'd want to wait and see if my fin gers were at stake. Cresol Is virtually crude "car bolic acid" officially it Is "mixture of cresols and other nhenols obtained from coal tar" The official name for "carbolic acid" is phenol. In my ludgment neither "car bolic acid" (phenol) nor cresol nor any preparation containing phenol or cresol should be used on any cut, abrasion or wouna. I believe It Is too dangerous, too likelv to cause gangrene (death of the tissues or the finger it self). I believe even the weak est "carbolic salve" or other ointment containing phenol or cresol retards natural healing by destroying delicate new cells as fast as they can form.
