Our Men and Nation's Charlei Hinkla Pearl Harbor C h a r 1 e s E. Hinkle, USN, fireman, first class. 713 Oak St., Medford, Ore., has been serving with the Naval Construction Battalion here, climaxing, with the war's end, a long period of duty that began in the Aleutians. In cold and heat, this battal ion of Seabees performed the strenuous, difficult work neces sary to victory- It spent 17 months in the Aleutians, from there came to the South Pacific. George Kile Emery Hilger On the USS Argonne In the Pacific Two Rogue River, Ore., Navy men, George Everett Kile, storekeeper second class, and Emery Eugene Hilger, boat swain's mate, second class, are serving on this tender which has seen action in almost every sea lane from Pearl Harbor to Leyts Gulf She escaped with minor damage in the Pearl Harbor at tack, then began her travels that took her to New Caledonia, Tu lagi, Guadalcanal. Wallace Casebeer Santa Barbara. Calif., Sgt. Wallace R. Casebeer. of Med ford, Ore., has reported to the Army Ground and Service Forc es Redistribution Station here for two weeks of rest and relax ntion at this southern California city's famed resort-hotels, now tinder Armv management. The veteran recently returned from seven months' overseas duty in Europe. Robert AUpaugh With the B6th Division in the Philipoines Private First Class Robert E. Alspaugh of Medford Oregon, is now entitled to wear on his right sleeve the gold and vellow wreath denoting mem bership in a unit which has been cited by the Army for outstand ing meritorious performance of duty. His organization, the 96th Division Band, has been so cited for its fine work on Leyte and Okinawa, where in addition to handling their musical duties, the bandsmen served as military police and command post guards. Pfc. Alspaugh, trombonist and a member of the popular Quin tones, resides at 824 West 2nd, Medford, Oregon. Arthur Grubb Camp W o 1 1 e r s, Tex. Pvt. Arthur David Grubb, son of Mrs. B. R. Elliott, route 2, box 194, Medford, Ore., has arrived at this Intantry Replacement Training Center to begin his basic training as infantryman. He has been assigned to a bat talion stressing rifle. La Verne Dunagan On the USS Giansar in the Pacific (Delayed) La Verne Wayne Dunagan, seaman, first class, USN, 412 West Jackson boulevard, Medford, Ore., is servin? on this cargo ship which did its share to float the Stars Knd Stripes over Tarawa, Okin awa and Tokyo by delivering food and tools of war to our fighting ships. The men of the Giansar shot down no Jap planes and sank no Jap submarines but when it comes to commendations, they have to take a back seat for no body. From service squadrons and various units of the Fleet have come "well dones" for de livery of thousands of tons of supplies where and when they were most needed. John Taylor Rnrnsnta Florida. Boyd Tryon On the USS Block Island in the P a c i f i c Boyd P. Tryon, chief water tender USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Tryon, Medford, Ore. has been serving cn this escort aircraft carrier. The first Block Island was sunk by a German submarine off Africa in May 1944, but ac companying destroyer escorts picked up every man of the crew and then finished off the U-boat. The crew, almost intact, was assigned to a new escort carver, which was renamed the Block Island. She reached the Pacific in time to take part in the Okinawa campaign and the in vasion of Borneo. D. L. Davis D. L Davis, boatswain's mate, second class, USNR, Route 2, Joe Jack Rd.. Medford, Ore., served aboard the famed Pacific Fleet aircraft carreir Enterprise. the fightingest carrier in the fleet", now back in the States for repairs after having been hit by a Jap suicide plane on May 14. The Enterprise, whose rec ord of battles dates back to Pearl Harbor, accounted for 911 Jap ai-craft shot down by her planes and guns, and 71 ships sunk and 192 probably sunk ,by '.Mr tl f vim T-' t! -i '4 I K - U -j'j) : M. PRICED PAY LESS AND DRESS BETTER Committee Cut In Congress Seen In Reorganizing Plan Washington, Oct. 10 (U.PJ The joint senate-house commit tee to reorganize congress will shortly recommend that bjth chambers reduce the number of their committees by more than 50 per cent, it was learned to day. A committee member said that a formal report will be made to congress within a month. As one of its main features, he said, it probably will advocate the con solidation of the 35 senate legis lative committees into 13 com mittees and of the 46 house units into 16. The special 12-member reor ganization committee was set up last year to study ways and means of "streamlining" the present legislative set-up of both houses. With Sen. Robert M. La Follctte.
