Your Health and It's Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Readers should address Inquiries to: Dr. William Brady. 26S El Camino. Beverly Hills. Calif. HI, GRUMPY, HOW'S YOUR Before the war I began pre paring a Little Lesson especial ly for the old folks. By consent of Dr. Fred erick Filsinger of Buffalo, whose contrl- b u 1 1 o n s to medical liters t u r e on the neglected sub ject of the care of elderly patients inspir ed me," I in tended to issue , Dr. Brady the booklet under the title "The Forgotten People," which Dr. Filsinger had used for one of his articles. I had made considerable head way on it, in fact I announced here that it was on the fire, but I was frightened off by the re sponse of the old folks. You see, I had always con trived to be hard boiled enough to discourage them from telling me their symptoms. It is not that I have no concern for the health and happiness of the old folks. Nothing would please me more than to give the old folks a long distance diagnosis and the right treatment for their ailments. As a pastime that would be nearly as enjoyable as doing a cross word puzzle or reading a good mystery story. But I can't do that. It would not be fair even to the correspondent who be lieves I could do as well as the doctor who examines and knows him or her. I'm a quack there's no denying that, but withal I'm a conscientious geek and I like to sleep nights. At first blush the project seemed alluring. Except such occasional discussions of the health problems of the aged as those of Dr. Filsinger which ex cited my interest, there had been little or nothing done about the matter in recent years. But tince Dr. Filsinger published his first papers we have had a sudden, and apparently hasty output of textbooks on geriatrics (old age and its disease), none of which is worth the trouble of reading, and a crop of popular books for the old folks, which are a good deal better, I think. Still and all, Cicero, Dr. Os ier, Dr. Ernest P. Boas, Dr. Oli ver Wendell Holmes, Luigl Cor naro and George Cheyne said practically all there was to say about old age long ago. Some of the things they said were not entirely right in the light of our present knowledge, but If you undertake to write about senil ity you must quote these old boys with due credit or else twist their ideas into different words and pretend you have never heard of them. Books for the old folks which I can recommend are "Treat ment of the Patient Past Fifty", by Ernst P. Boas, M. D., The JYAS.SUH. FRENDS-S. ( WE'RE BACK ON THE AIRJ AMOS 'N' ANDY rot tiNSo 6:00 KMED i Za"& t.t I ii NO LruW 1 CALCIUM METABOLISM? Year Book Publishers, Inc., Chi cago, and "Yon Are Younger Than You Think", ' by Martin Gumpert, M. D Duell, Soan and Pearce, New York. The former is perhaps intended for medical readers, although there Is much in it that any layman may read with profit. The lat ter is for popular reading. Any book dealer can get these for you if they are not in your pub lic library. QUESTIONS A- ANSWERS Hector nurk My wife had an operntlnn which Included, among other things "repair of one ovary". Does that mean re moval ot the ovary? 1 have repeated ly asked the physician in charge hut he always manages to send me away without an answer. W. E. M.J Answer Repair hardly means re moval. Jn any case the patient has a right to know exactly what was done at operation. If the doctor Is on the level he will explain, in plain words the palisnt can understand, what was done. Perhaps the doctor prefer, to inform the patient herself. Wash the Wheat We have whole wheat here to feed mir rahblts, but Is it very dusty and dirty. If I boil It will he bnillnB de stroy some of the vitamin B? (R. R.) Answer Wash the wheat by run ning water throuRh It in colander or sieve. Cooking heat destroys some of the Bl. How to use plain wheat in the everyday dietary is described in pamphlet "Wheat to Eat" copy on written request tno clipping) if you provide stamped self addressed en velope. Do not confuse the wheat pamphlet with the red book "What tn Eat and Why", which deals with foods, beverages, minerals, vitamins, calories, acid and alkaline foods, etc. for copy send twenty-five cents and stamped self addressed envelope.
