Newspaper Page TextPEELER IS SUED FOR 12 ILL IN LIBEL ACTION Chicago, Oct. 3 (U.PJ Two libel suits were on file here to day asking $12,000,000 from Westbrook Pegler, the Kings Feature Syndicate, Inc., and the Illinois Publishing and Printing company, for allegedly intimat ing that A. N. Spanel, president of the International Labor cor poration was a communist. Plaintiffs in the case were Spanel and the Latex corpora tion. The first suit, filed in federal court, asked $B,000,U00 from Pegler and the printing company, publishers of the Chi cago Herald-American. The sec ond suit, asking a similar amount from Kings Features, was filed in Cook county circuit court. Both were filed yesterday. Try Ut COMfYMMO FIGHT ANNA1IES Saigon, French Indo-China, Oct. 1 (Delayed) (U.R) British and Japanese troops fought two pitched battles against rebellious Annamite forces in the Saigon area last night and scattered fighting was reported continuing today. The heaviest fighting occurred along the Chinois river, where the Annamites, using machine guns, tried to seize a British-held power station. The rebels were driven off after a four-hour bat tle. Japanese troops stationed in the northern end of Saigon ran into stiff opposition around the same time when they began clearing out native centers of re sistance in the Rue Paul Blanchy district. Fog Dispeller For Air Fields Costly Areata Use Proves Eureka, Cal., Oct. 3 (U.R) The development of "fido" fog intensive, disposal of at Areata naval air station was revealed by the navy today after being kept a war secret for the past year and a half. Developed to make a "hole in the fog" for landing planes, the navy's mark 5 fog dispersal units operate by running gas through a dozen two inch pipes along the edge of the landing field. Burn ing gas in a lower pipe heats the gas in the pipes above, condens ing it to a vapor, which, when ignited gives off intense heat that eliminates the fog hazard. This method, known as the thermo (heat) method has proved invaluable to Britain's RAF, but is fabulously expensive with costs coming to between $4,000 and $5,000 to land one plane. Jimmy Stewart To Resume Film Work And Remain Single Hollywood, Oct. 3 (U.R) Col. Jimmy Stewart came home from j the war today and said he j wanted to forget about "all this j hero stuff" as soon as possible and get back to making a living as a movie actor. The gangling screen actor, ! who sneaked off the train at Pasadena to avoid the Union station crowds, said the one other thing he was sure about was that he planned to remain a bachelor. V '" -M Ultra Short-Wave For Long Distance San Francisco, Oct. 3 (U.R) The army today let the public in on another of its "secret wea pons" a highly-mobile ultra short-wave directional radio transmitter which in peacetime may eliminate the need for long distance telephone wires. During the war more than 10, 000 of the transmitters named AN TRC for army navy trans portable radio communications weighing less than 300 pounds and capable of keeping up with the fastest moving motorized troops, helped speed American invasion forces in Africa, Europe and the Pacific. Purchases were $454,000,000. A war finance division spokes man pointed out, however, that the figures did not allow for the last three days of the month. He said sales are always heavy at the close of the month and may alter the final accounting con siderably.
