SOCIETY and CLUBS BPWC Members Plan to Attend Fall Conference Plans for attending a district conference to be held Oct. 13 and 14-et Grants Pass were made at the first fall session of the Medford Business and Profes sional Women's club held Thurs day evening at the Girls' Com munity club. Miss Laura York, president, conducted the meet ing, attended by 35 members and guests. . It was announced that Mrs. Justin Smith, Medford teacher and president of the Jackson County League of Women Vot ers, will be speaker at a dinner meeting Saturday, Oct. 13, dur ing the Grants Pass conference. The week of Oct. 7 to 13 has been set as National Business and Professional Women's Week, it was announced. Eagles' Auxiliary Announces Dinner A birthday dinner has been planned by the Ladies Auxil iary, Fraternal Order of Eagles, for Tuesday evening, the affair to be at 6:30 o'clock at the EagleV hall. 219 West Main street. The dinner .will honor members whose birthdays fall in June, July and August. All members and their hus bands are invited to attend and each is to bring a covered dish for the dinner menu. Family And Guests Take Beach Vacation Guests this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Howard, 624 North Riverside avenue, are Mrs. Mable Nignacco and daugh ter, Jean, of Alameda, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Howard, with their daughter, Gayle, and guests spent the past week at Gold Beach, Ore., and Mrs. Nagnacco and daughter plan to return to their home this week. Travelers Are Guests In Medford Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. George Roberts and family, en route from Seattle to Los Angeles, were guests of an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Roberts, 720 West Second street, Tuesday. The Roberts resided in Seattle during the war but are now returning to their former.home in Los Angeles. Fir St. Colonel Honored In Recent Days; Leaves Wednesday A number of informal social affairs have been given in re cent days to welcome home Col. Lyle P. Wilcox, who arrived in Medford recently after 20 months in Europe with the 19th Tactical Air Command. The of ficer leaves Wednesday to report at Tampa, Fla. Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. Lem ery, Windsor avenue, entertained at dinner and bridge recently for Col. and Mrs. Wilcox, with 20 guests invited for the evening. Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Bengtson entertained at a buffet supper for the couple, inviting 20 guests to their home, 122 Oregon Ter race, and Mr. and Mrs. Royal Bebb. 528 South Grape street, entertained last Saturday eve ning for Col. and Mrs. Wilcox and Col. and Mrs. Stephen Nye, Jr. Col. Nye also recently re turned home after an extended period of overseas duty in Eu rope. Officers, Wives Give Card Party A group of army and navy of ficers and their wives enjoyed an evening of bridge at the Out post Tuesday, this being the first of a scries planned for Tuesday evening of each week. Four tables of cards were in play. Prizes for high score went to Lt. Com. Oscar L. Nelson, Lt. J. C. Woodward and Lt. Com. and Mrs. H. W. Retan All officers and their wives are invited to the Tuesday eve ning parties and reservations may bo made by calling the Out post. Colonel Returns Here After Leave Extension Col. Fred Rankin returned to Medford yesterday after having been granted an extension of leave and will remain here for an additional two weeks before reporting to Ft. Sill, Okla. Col. Rankin, who recently arrived here after an extended period of duty overseas with the army, left Friday for Ft. Sill and had reach ed Sacramento before receiving news of the leave extension. He is visiting his wife at their home, 132 South Oakdale avenue. Several dinner and luncheon parties have been given for friends of Col. and Mrs. Rankin since his arrival here. Sister and Brother Leave For University Miss Jeannette Thatcher and her brother, Carson Thatcher, left Wednesday for Minneapolis, Minn., where they will enroll at the University of Minnesota. Miss Thatcher, attorney, who for the past two years has been prac ticing law in Medford and with a Portland firm, will take a grad uate course in law, while her brother, a partner in the Pre cision Machine Works of this city, will take a special mechani cal course at the school. Parents of the students are Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Thatcher, 210 Beatty street. Bremerton Visitors Leave For Home Friday Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Calvert of Bremerton, Wash., who for the past month have been guests of Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Kunz, Old Central Point highway, left Fri day for their home. Their son, Billie Calvert, metalsmith first class in the navy, who has also been visiting here, remained with Dr. and Mrs. Kunz for a longer visit. The Calverts plan to return to Medford about the first of next year to reside. Californians Arrive For Visit la City Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Tucker of Lon Beach, Calif., have arrived in Medford to spend two weeks with their son-in-law and daugh ter. Col. and Mrs. Lyle P. Wil cox, 706 Dakota avenue. Mrs. J. E. Ear ley and Mrs. E. C. Nilcs will be hostesses for luncheon, set for 12:30 o'clock, and during the business session election will be held. Mrs. Niles is the retiring pres ident of the group. Women's Society To Meet Tuesday The Women's Society of Christian Service of the Metho dist church will meet in the church parlors Tuesday. A des sert luncheon will be served by the Just Folks Circle at 1:30 p. m. and will be followed by a business meeting and program by members of the Loyalty Cir cle. A short executive meeting wil be held at 1 o'clock. A special invitation is given to the young married women of the church and there will be a nurs ery for small children. Dinner and Dance Given at Outpost A group of naval officers were entertained at the Outpost last evening for dinner and dancing. A committee of hostesses, head ed by.Miss Margaret Ruth Bol ton, arranged the party. More than 40 guests were present. Misi Halgren In City For Siay of Month Miss Viladean Halgen, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hal gren, -315 Portland avenue, has prrived in Medford for a month's visit with her parents after completing a 15-months private secretarial course at Armstrong busniess school at Berkeley. Calif. She will return to that city during the latter part of October to enroll at the University of California. Morrillt In Medford For Week-end Visit Mr. and Mrs. John Morrill of Pebble Beach, Calif., accompa nied by Mrs. Morrill's mother, Mrs. Anita Lloyd of San Fran cisco, arrived here Saturday aft ernoon to spend the week-end as guests of Mrs. Ralph Norris, Old Stage Road. The Morrills, former Medford residents, are en route to Victoria, B. C, and will leave tomorrow to continue their trip by motor. Mrs. Jennie Hutchinson Entertains At Dinner Mrs. Anna Kuhn, Lewiston, Ida. Mrs. Etnel Warenfelt, Port land, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson T. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Hutchinson and daughter, Shir ley, were dinner guests of Mrs. Jennie Hutchinson at her home, 522 West Tenth street, Monday evening. VFW Auxiliary Plans Luncheon and Meeting Mrs I. D. Canfield will be hos tess to the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at a 1 o'clock dessert luncheon at her home, Aloha Ranch on the Coleman Creek road. Saturday, Sept. 29. The afternoon will be spent in sewing. Mrs. Margaret Erbes, president of the auxiliary, phone 7305, will have charge of arrangements for transportation. Jacksonville Club Has First Meeting Jacksonville Jacksonville Garden club members held the first fall meeting Thursday, gathering in the new club rooms A committee and other members have decorated and furnished the rooms and much interest was shown in a project conducted to raise funds for oth er needed articles. After a business meeting Mrs. L. G. Gentner of Medford gaVc an informal talk on flowering bulbs from the earliest bloom ing snow drops to the later spring and summer bulbs. Many bulbs were distributed to the members for the benefit of the treasury. Mrs. Gentner spoke of the dis trict meeting, to be held Oct. 16 at Grants Pass, and also told of th pi ins being made by clubs to assist with "living memor ials." Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Helen Reed. Mrs. Lois McKee and Mrs. L. E. Hamlin. Troop Has Dinner At Philips Home Mrs. S. E. Philips entertained the Ladies' Mounted Troop at her home. Big Boulder ranch, last Tuesday evening for dinner. Members rode out to the Philips ranch and following dinner and a troop meeting, made the return ride by moonlight. Seventeen were present. Next meeting of the troop is scheduled for the second Tues day of October. Wesleyan Service Guild Meets Tuesday Evening Twenty-five business and pro fessional women who are mem bers of the Wcsleyan Service guild, Methodist church, were entertained Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. C. A. Meeker. 724 East Jackson street, for the first meeting of the fall. Pro gram for the evening was built around "school days" and Mrs. Everett Faber. president, review ed the work of the guild last year and outlined plans for the coming year.
