SENATORS LOSE
TO YANKEES AS
DETROIT BEATEN
New York, Sept. 21 (U.R)
The "turtle derby" for the
American league pennant lacked
only the strains of slow music
today with the Detroit Tigers
and Washington Senators funeral-marching
along as is to
their doom instead of to fat
money payoff of the World
Series.
The Senators looked like
"nine old men" In losing their
fifth straight game at Yankee
Stadium to New York, 6 to 1,
yesterday, playing with their
eyes on the scoreboard to see
whether the Tigers were faring
any better at Cleveland.
Thy weren't. The Indians
made It two straight over De
troit, also by a 6 to 1 score. All
of their runs came along with
a deluge of rain In the eighth
innine
The Tigers salvaged more out
of their defeat than the Sena
tors, because they now can
Clinch the pennant on any com
bination of five victories or de
feats They need to win five of
their six remaining games to
take the flag if Washington wins
all of its four contests. Each
Washington defeat makes It ne
cessary for Detroit to win one
less ;nme.
The Cardinals tightened up
the National league race again
as Harry Brechcen pitched a 2
to 0, sixhit shutout over the
Cubs for his sixth straight vic
tory. That reduced Chicago's
lead to two games with eight
more for each team to play.
The Boston Braves defeated
the Dodgers at Brooklyn, 3 to 2,
in the National with Bob Logan
nutpiichlng Hal Gregg while
Randy Heflin of the Red Sox
shut out the Athletics at Boston
2 to 0 in the American,

Stcelhead fishing In Rogue
river is rapidly approaching its
peak and will continue from
four to six weeks, according to
the dope gathered by Al Piche.
Fish are numerous in practically
all parts of the river and there
is hardly a choice of riffle runs
or holes that do not contain fish.
Trout 12 Inches long or larger
and many fine steelhead have
been reported taken all week
from various parts of the river.
Bait results are being ob
tained with light taper lead
ers, siia eight or 10 hooks
with slngla eggs, or siia two,
four and six hooks with two
or mora eggs threaded on the
hook. Anglers are nurlonti
not to plarca the egg but to
leave the point of the hook
imbedded in the egg. est re
sults are from Gold rfill up
stream to McCloud.
Lon Rankin landed a nice six
pound steelhead Sunday near
Elks picnic grounds. Using a
small spinner. Rankin battled
the fish for 35 minutes before
successfully bringing it to shore.
Boat fishing out of Grants
Pass Is getting the big winter
teelheads, on bait. From
Grants Pass to Gold Beach Is
a thrilling and beautiful trip
with excellent fishing to be
had. Would-be travellers are
cautioned not to attempt the
trip without an experienced
guide.
All lake fishing It now at
an end. which leaves the
Rogue river the only fishable
stream,
Frank Basher's recent trip
throughout the state, giving ex
aminations for football officials,
has done a lot to attain uni
formity In the rules. Basher's
trip was sponsored by the Ore
gon High School Activities asso
ciation. He is president of the
Portland Officials' association
and well versed on rules. He
was here last Friday and con
ducted examinations and held
an open discussion at which lit
tle misunderstandings and mis
interpretations In the rules were
cleared up. Basher's knowledge
did a lot to clear up what has
pestered this conference for a
iong time one official inter
preting a rule one way and an
other man another way.

MATCH ON FOUL
Georges Dusctte was handed a
sound thrashing in the top half
of the Medford armory double

when Coast Champion Jack Lips
comb kicked him out of the ring
and wouln't let him return. Du
sotte hart previously taken the
first fall with a full nelson.
Rough Rufus Jones made it
two in a row over Ernie Piluso
when he took two out of three

nearly had the match .won when
he hung Jones' head in the ropes
but missed a sonnenburg and was
pinned.
Tex Porter and Gorilla Poggi
went to a draw in the opener,
which was more of a slugging
match than a wrestling bout.
