Ownership Chans Change of ownership of Mann's Beauty Salon, 14 North Central avenue, was announced yesterday by Earl Herendeen, new owner, who has been employed in the shop for the past four years. Mrs. Ar thur McVeigh, former owner, will continue as an operator at the salon. Apply For Permits W. S. Huffman, 221 Vancouver ave nue, applied for a building per mit yesterday at the office of the city superintendent to add a utility room to a residence at a cost of $200 and C. B. Wood ward, 1016 West 11th street, made application for a permit to reshingle a residence at a cost of $130. Horn From Army John R. Steele arrived in the city this morning from Ft. Lewis, Wash., after receiving an honorable dis charge yesterday from the army and, with his wife, Isabell, is making his home at 27 Newtown street. In the army four years and eight months, Stelle served six months as a technician, fifth grade, with an artillery unit in the European theater. His par ents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Stelle, reside at 523 Pearl street. The Stelles have two other sons in the service, Charles, with the army at Camp Wolters, Tex., and Russell, stationed with the navy in San Francisco. At Thurman Home Second Lt. Harry Thurman arrived in Medford yesterday morning to spend a four day leave with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs L. B. Thurman, 722 West 14th street, before reporting to Camp Stoneman, . Calif., for overseas assignment with the air force. His wife, visiting at the Thur man home from Ontario, Ore., expects to return next week. Al so at the home, on leave from the army, are the Thurman's other -son, Second Lt. Louis Thurman, and Mrs. Thurman's nephew, First Lt. Claude Esself- trom, of Reedsport, Ore., now with the marine corps and re cently returned from three years service overseas. Lt. Car FSre A car belonging to John Hutchins, 433 North Col umbus street, was slightly dam aged by fire about 3:45 p. m. yesterday, the fire department reported. Returns Mrs. A. E. Reames, 103 South Holly street, returned Sunday from Tacoma, Wash., where she spent the past two months with her son, Edward L. Reames, and her mother, Mrs. Edward J. Lanning. Sergeant Home Sgt. Roy Lay, who served three and one half years in the army, has been given an honorable discharge and Is now at his home, 245 South Central avenue. The for mer sergeant was stationed at the Santa Ana, Calif., air base. Navy Man Released James B. Driskell, seamen 1c, USNR, 713 West 14th -street, was dis charged from the navy, accord ing to a dispatch from the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton. Soldiers Discharged Among soldiers recently discharged at Fort Lewis were Sgt. Duane E. Estes, 327 North Holly street; Sgt. Floyd E. Davidson, route 4, box 120; T5 Harry M. David son, route 1; TSgt. William H. McCart, route 3, box 474; and Sgt. Walter H. Miller, 1016 Red dy avenue. To Reside Here Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Sherman arrived in the city yesterday from Bremer ton. Wash., and plan to make their home in Medford. Sherman received an honorable discharge from the navy Saturday at the Bremerton naval base after three years and three months overseas in both theaters. He wears the bronze star, three campaign rib bons and the good conduct me dal. Visiting Friends Mrs. Nick Nuzzi, of North Hollywood, Calif., has been visiting in the valley at the homes of Mrs. Rosalee Grounds and Mrs. Bert Tousignant, on Cherry Lane. Mrs. Nuzzi greatly praises the natural beauty of Medford and surrounding country. Her hus band has been with Universal Studios in Hollywood for the past 12 years in charge of the library of music. Shelley Home Following his return to the United States Sept. 10 after 15 months overseas with the 96th division, First Lt. Willis Shelley Is spending a 30 day leave with his wife and son at the family home at 330 Ncrth Holly street. The officer was awarded the combat infantry man's badge, four bronze battle stars and an arrowhead for par ticipation in beachhead landings on Leyte and Okinawa. He will report to Camp Roberts, Calif., for reassignment and the family will accompany him south. GIRL CLEARED Winona, Minn., Sept. 19 (U.R) Teresa Kouba, 16, today was cleared of second degree murder charges brought in the com mando knife slaying of her 15-year-old cousin after a water melon party last July 18. A county grand jury late yester day ruled that the girl was justi fied in stabbing her cousin, Don ald Cada. She said she killed the youth when he made im proper advances. Sept. 19 (U.R) FBI investigators today enter ed the investigation of two men caught at Milwaukie, Ore., with 324 cases of bootleg liquor. Ray Conway, administrator of the liquor control commission, announced that the truckload of high grade whiskey had been stolon from the Merchants Wholesale Company, Los An geles, thus drawing the federal government into the case be cause of illegal transportation across a state line. AGED WOMAN DIES Fairfield, Cal., Sept. 19 0J.R Funeral services were to be held today for Mrs. Mary Jane Hug gard, whose death occurred just 88 days before her 109th birth day. Mrs. Huggard, who died yesterday, was born in Ireland Dec. 15, 1836. She cami to America with her husband in 1870 and settled in Denver where she reared 11 children, only three of whom outlive her.
