UNDULANT Undulant fever, Malta fever, Mediterranean fever, goat fever, contagious abortion of cattle, Bruce 1 1 o s l s Bang's disease, Texas fever are different names for what is prob ably the same infection, with a germ called Brucella meli' tensis. Un d u 1 a n t means the feV' er occurs in a Dr. Brady succes s i o n of feverish relapse with intervals of what appears to be convales cense, and so the course of the illness is months or even years. No reliable diagnostic test has been developed, although cul tures from blood and other fluids, skin tests and agglutina tion tests similar to the Widal test for typhoid, may give some help in diagnosis. In many cases of what eventually proves to be undulant fever, the best of phy- sicians may be strongly of the opinion that the illness is bac terial endocarditis, rheumatic fever, malaria, chronic bron chitis, pyelitis, even tuberculosis. Workers in meat packing plants, particularly those hand ling hogs or pork products; per sons handling hides of cattle, sheep, hogs, goats; persons car ing for such animals contract un dulant fever in many instances. The possibility of such infection, SUMMONS FOR PUBLICATION In the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon for Jackson County ETHEL I. CALDWELL, Plaintiff vs. JOHN L. CALDWELL, Defend ant. BENGTSON, Attorney for Administratrix. 4 A & FEVER as well as inxectioi by the agency of flies carrying the I germs of the disease on their ; feet, must be kept constantly in mind. It would be foolish to as sume that the universal cooking, boiling, scalding, sterilization or pasteurization of milk can pro tect the public from the risk of contracting undulant fever. Cer tainly any nondescript milk or milk you buy casually without previous knowledge or experi ence of its purity, should be so sterilized or rendered safe for consumption. Thas it, boil it for five minutes, or scald it (bring to boil for one minute) or pas teurize it (heat it to 150 degrees F. for half an hour). This will make any milk safe for infant, invalid, or any one. Children, who are the main milk drinkers, seldom have un dulant fever. Most of the cases of undulant fever occur in the West-North-Central states, espec ially Iowa, where hogs are raised on the largest scale and the por cine strain of the Brucella is most prevalent. Adult males have a high incidence of undul ant fever and they are the handlers of animals and car casses. .
