Too many dentists acquiesce in the commercial propaganda which gives the American wise rcre the impression that "oral hygiene" is a nice refined way of saying brush your teeth. To many laymen and some dentists I may seem Inconsistent when I talk about the prophy laxis the prevention of pyor rhea. Do I not scout the popu- lar notion that one can save one's teeth by brushing them with just the right dentifrice and Jst the right twist of the wrist, just so many times a day? I do. And if you will grant that I am not fooling about it I'll add that, with all your fuss about tooth-brushing your teeth are hardly as clean as a hound's tooth and for the very good rea son that the hound never brushes his teeth he just uses 'em as teeth should be used. For health's sake, dentists and people put aside this childish notion soap and water can change diseased or deteriorated mouth, jaw, tooth sockets gums, digestive (salivary) glands and teeth into a sound state. Once such deterioration, degeneration, decay has begun the very best you can hope for is to retard or check the process. How to retard or check the deteriora tion, as I see it, will appear pres ently. Right here I want to im press upon you the fact that the prophylaxis of pyorrhea com prises much more than periodic inspection, cleaning, removal of tartar or other accumulations, repair of any minute cavities or fissures and perhaps burnishing or publishing by the dentist though this is the very minimum of deniistry every one needs re gardless of the apparent present condition of his mouth. At least as important for the prophylaxis of pyorrhea is adequate nutri tion, and I'll endeavor to ex plain In talks to follow, not just my notions about it, but what recognized nutrition authorities have lecently learned about the prevention of tooth decay, Rum and tooth socket degeneration and the other familiar manifesta tions of so-called pyorrhea.
