WHY EVERYBODY IS More dentists per thousand population in the United States than in any other country in the world. Scale of living h i g h er in the United States of Am erica than in any other country. Mire soap (dentri fice) and tooth brushes in the U. S. A. per thousand popu- j lation than! anywhere else i in the world. Dr. Brady Presumably the people who buy the merchandise brush their teeth more carefully and more frequently than do people else where And finally we North Americans (inhabitants of the en tire continent) or 99.9'"o of us at least, have poorer teeth than the civilized inhabitants of any other continent. The dentists have a word for it, pyorrhea. Pyorrhea adveolar is Is chronic suppurative (pus forming) inflammation of the parariontium. that is, the alveolar process of the jaw bone, the lin ing of tooth sockets and the gum. Other names for it are chronic atrophic alveolitis (long-enduring inflammation of tooth socket or sockets with wasting and shrink ing of the structures involved), Rigg's disease. Patients frequently complain that Dentist A diagnoses pyor rhea and Dentist B finds no sign of pyorrhea. Such hair-splitting more!;; goes to show that pyor rhea (to use the most familiar namo like arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and chronic arthritis (rheumatism), is not a disease with a definite on- .set but a condition one may re gard as degeneration which be gins insidiously and progresses gradually, so that no dentist or physician can give more than his individual opinion that an indi vidual hasn't the trouble today but has it next week. Degeneration in this sense means deterioration in which function Is impaired or lost and the living tissue cells are replac ed with inert fibrous material. scar tissue. This retrogressive process is commonly known as atrophy, which means wasting In fact dentists apply the term atrophic gingivitis (gingival) pro nounced jiniiva!, means pertain Ing to the gums.) to chronic reces sion of the gum tissue. Some dentists, such as Louis I. Gross man, D.D.S., D.M.D. in a chapter on mouth diseases in Cyclopedia of Medicine. Surgery and the Specialties, Vol. 10, '43. even at tribute this extreme thinness and recession of the gums to "over- brushing of the teeth '. Now that, I submit indicates how sad ly muddled and confused most dentists and physicians are about pyorrhea or whatever you prefer to ca'l the degeneration process in laws, gums, teeth. I hope no reader will Infer that I think 1 know more about the question than run-of-the-mill doctors and dentists do. All 1 know about pyorrhea is what I read In the letters I get from patients, doctors and den tists and in the medical and den tal magazines and books and. of course what I dream up out of thin air So 1 hope dentists, physicians and people will take what I say in these talks about pyorrhea as nothing more than one man's views and accept, reject or try to refute them, as you please. At any rate it can do you no harm to read these little squibbs when there Is nothing better within convenient reach. QUESTIONS ANSWERS Toots. Man! Am mffertng from nmrltli In back. rholar! nn1 arm.
