B flJR) President Tniman today recom mended to congress cutbacks of $3,500,000,000 In 1946 fiscal year appropriations and contract authorization of 28 civilian war agencies. The White House said the cut backs recommended by the pres ident Included $2,755,081,394 in what were described as wer-re-lated appropriations for the cur rent fiscal year and $794,501,208 in contract authorizations. Military Unaffected Military activities of the war and navy departments were not affected, the White House said. Cutbacks affecting these ac tivities will be dealt with by the president In new recommen dations to congress within a few days. In addition to the cutbacks, the president proposed reduc tions of $9,318,307 in the 1940 limitations on administrative ex penses of several government corporations and agencies. lie also suggested a plan for re turning to the treasury $1,100, 600 In certain government cor poration funds and proposed pro visions for extending the avail ability of certain national de fense appropriations to June 30, 1948, and for facilitating the liquidation of war agencies. First Ford Trucks Off Assembly Line Richmond, Cal.. Sent. 6 (U.R) The first lot of 50 trucks pro duced here since the war was off the assembly line of the Ford Motor Co. plant today, and of ficials of the company said the prewar capacity of 350 trucks a day probably will be achieved In several months. Th -Richmond plant, serving the west coast and Hawaiian Is lands, Is continuing modification rf tanks and motorized equip ment for th armed forces, but lias virtually halted assembly of new combat vehicles. Washington, Sept. 8 UB The office of price administra tion, acted today to protect ten ants against having their rented houses suddenly sold out from under them. Beginning Sept. 15 OPA will require a minimum waiting period of six months before purchaser can evict a tenant and move Into his house. The waiting period Is now three months. The longer waiting period will be enforced In all rent con trol areas except where the OPA area rent director decides that three months Is adequate It will not apply If the buyer of the house is a former service man. Price Administrator Chester Bowles said a labor department survey revealed that the per centage of rental houses has been reduced as much as 33 per cent In some areas by record sales of rental homes. Bowles said that rent controls would be continued as long as pressure on rent ceilings re mains. Portland Watches For Tong Gunmen Portland, Ore., Sept. 8 (U.PJ Police reinforcements today pa trolled the Portland Chinese dis trict otter San Francisco authori ties warned thnt 25 gunmen were en route here to start a Tong war. Chief of Police Harry M. Miles said he had been notified by San Francisco Police Chief Charles Dullen. Dullea said Chinatown squad had picked up a tip that differences were to be "settled" between the Suey Sing and Sing Kong societies. DeMille, noted motion. picture and radio figure, today carried a fight against political action by economic groups a step further by formation of the "De Mille Foundation for Political Freedom." Articles of Incorporation were filed for the organization with the secretary of state's office hore. They declared It will work to establish the right of Individ uals to "work and earn a living without paying dues or assess ments for any political cause sponsored by an employer, asso ciation, corporation or labor union." "Mr. Sampson told me he had a ranch and stocks and securi ties valued at SfiO.000 and that he had made a will in my favor," Mrs. Joan House, 26-year-old Australian war bride, declared. "Since his death I have learn ed he had nothing." Mrs. House said she and Simp son had planned to go to Nevada last Aug. 27 for her to get a di vorce from her navy ensign hus band and to be married. Samp son's body was found Just before they were to leave. How to can peaches with or without J a gar Some things you should know about cap turing the delicious, ripe summer flavor of peaches for winter-time eating To Can Peel, halve, pit; slice if wished. Hot Pack: Cover with boiling syrup or water, boil 3 to 5 minutes. Fill hot jar to inch from top with hot fruit and liquid. Remove bubbles. Wipe rim. Adjust lid. Process pints or quarts in boiling water bath Freestone 10 minutes Clingstone 20 minutes CM Pack: Fill hot jar with peeled raw halves. Cover to V inch from top with boiling syrup or water. Finish as above, process in boiling water bath Freestone 20 minutes Clingstone 35 minutes Suitable Canning Syrups Light Syrup: Dissolve 1 cup sugar in 3 to 4 cups water. Corn Syrup and Honey: Com syrup or honey may be used to replace up to yi the sugar specified. Water Pack: Peaches may be canned satis factorily without sugar. Use boiling water or fruit juice in place of sugar syrup. The fruit will lose some flavor and color. To Peel Frtesione and some clings: Dip 6 to 8 at a time into kettle of boiling water for about 1 minute, then plunge into cold water and slip off skins. To lye peel cling peaches: Use an enamel or granite kettle not metal. Add 4 table spoons lye to 2 gallons cold water. Heat to boiling. Place peaches in strainer, a few at a time, and lower into boiling solution; leave in 45 to 60 seconds. Rinse well in quantity of cold water running water is best. Peel Warning: Follow directions carefully to frevent spattering of lye. Do not handle ye dipped fruit until it is thoroughly washed. Lye will burn if not properly handled.
