M.D. Readers should address Inquiries to: Dr. William Brady. 264 CI Camlno. Beverly Hills. Calif. EMINENT SPECIALIST A year ago I had nephrectomy j because of a large stone. The kidney was removed by an em inent special ist. After wards he told me never 1 0 drink any more milk or eat any more milk products in other words, to avoid calcium rich foods. This I did for months. How ever, our fam Brady ily physician says it is a mis take ... I am so thin I'd like to go back to drinking milk, but don't want to endanger my re mainting kidney . . . Maybe this is a foolish question . . . (L.C.A.) If you will forgive me, sir, I'll chuckle a bit first (I hope vou can join me in thisl over your subtle use of the cliche "cmin ent specialist". Just where, I nave often wondered, does credulous customer draw the line between ordinary physic ians or specialists and eminent ones. It is amusing if not ger mane that even the plodding ol" one-hoss-and-buggy conductor of this dreadful column can show you, in his scrapbook, a number of clippings from newspapers and magazines in which he is re ferred to and even deferred to, as an "eminent medical author ity" or a "noted physician" or a "leading specialist". So, if you can forgive me, sir, it is alto gether gratuitous and absurd to say the kidney was removed by an "eminent specialist." Shall we settle for surgeon or a doc tor who does such run of the mill operations Thank you. Your question is not at all foolish. I'm glad you asked it, for numerous correspondents seem to be unduly concerned about the posibility of calcium rich or high-calcium foods (milk, milk products, cheese, egg yolk, peas, beans, peanuts, greens) or very hard drinking water (con taining more than the ordinary amount of calcium) or "too much" calcium taken as supple ment to the diet or as medicine, causing or contributing to devel opment of kidney stones, gall stones, hardening of the arteries, rheumatiz and what have you. I agree with your family physician, sir. It is a mistake to try to restrict the proportion of calcium-high foods in your diet. If I had lost a kidney I'd make the very foundation of my diet milk, at least a quart a day Aside from the Told brothers. H. and Ben, Mrs. Sumscy, and of course the ubiquitous Salrey gamps (nurses, trained and wild, who double as doctors when ever the customers will stand for it), no one today imagines "too much calcium" in food, wa ter or medicine, can do any seri ous hram. We need not worry much about the Wiseacres who buy drinking water because they fear the municipal wtaer contains too much calcium. As Barnum said . . . No, sir, your question is not a Dr. I W ANTE EXPERIENCED FAY EOIX For Permanent Position At Bear Creek Orchards Phone 2161 HEIGHTS OT RUNNlNei TcR fr MCPNNG TRMN BV SETfiN Ouf MMf AN HOW! Although you tell me. not ask me, 1 here tell the world there I no foundation for the notion that too much calcium (in food, water or medicine! has anything to do with the .levelopment of rheumatism, urthriti hardening of arteries, kidney stones or gallstones. On the contrary, there is substantia! scientific basis for the belief that prolonged calcium de ficiency is an Important factor in the development of various chronic ills or disabilities called "rheumatism" .and of premature senility and hardening of the arteries. iCopynght 1915 by John T.
