Apply for Permits Raymond Reter, 20 Glenn Oak Court, ap plied for a building permit at the office of the city superin tendent Saturday to erect an ad dition to a residence at a cost of $1,500. F. B. Sweeney, 1704 West Main street, applied for a permit to reshingle a residence and garage at a cost of $200. Barnum Home George Bar num. Jr., Wt 3'c, arrived home Friday to spend a 30 day navy leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Barnum, Spring street. Barnum arrived in the U. S. after 20 months overseas service in the South Pacific where he was awarded three bronze battle stars for action in the Marshall and Caroline is lands. The navy man, who will reDort to Portland on expiration of his leave, also saw action off Okinawa. Denman Discharged Pvt. Joe P. Denman. son of Mr. and Mrs, R. W. Denman, 1218 West Main street, is visiting friends in Port land, en route home from Ft. Lewis. Wash., where he recently received an honorable discharge from the army. Denman entered the service in 1943, and holds the purple heart medal for wounds rooeiuoit t T.pvtK. After four "months in the hospital, he was returned to the fighting lines, and then to this country for a discharge. . Cuffel On Leave Lt. Robert Cuffel, who arrived in the States Tuesday from the Pacific, is spending a 30 day leave in the city with his wife and daughter, at the family home, 811 West Thirteenth street, and his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Cuffel. 909 Forth Central avenue. Cuf fel, who served as a flight en gineer on a B-29 for nine months, was awarded the distinguished flving cross, air medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Pacific theatei ribbon with three battle stars. Fire Hun City firemen were called to American Fruit Grow ers packing house on South Fir street at 12:38 p. m. today to extinguish a small fire on the second floor of the building, caused by a careless cigarette smoker, firemen reported. A burning cigarette set fire to boxes and pine cones and caused slight damage, firemen said. I Floyd Loree Perkins, 20, of Mt. Shasta, Ray Duane Carlson, 16, and Dale Jean Voss, 15, were taken to county jail Saturday fol lowing their arrest by city police on a charge of passing bad checks, local officers reported today. According to the report, Voss admitted writing the checks and the other two cashed them. The youth reportedly signed the name of H. B. George, route 4. and the checks ranged in value from S47 to $53. Police Chief Clatous McCredie warned local business houses to day to be cautious of accepting checks with signatures of un known persons, and to verify identity of holders, as the city has been flooded recently with bad checks. OBITUARY GARLAND R. LANCE Garland Raymond Lance, a resident of Gold Hill for the last 14 years passed away at his home in Gold Hill late Sunday eve ning following a lengthy illness. He was was born in Geneva, III., on March 8, 1899. On October 29, 1921, he was married to Florence Schlicht at Aurora. 111. He was engaged In the forest service as construction foreman. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Mrs. Flor ence Lance of Gold Hill, his mother, Mrs. Anna Lance, Ven ice, Calif., two brothers, Leonard M. Lance, Tonopah, Nev., and Lester J. Lance of Tajunga, Cal. Funeral services will be held at the Perl Funeral Home Wed nesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Fraternal Order of Eagles will officiate at the funeral serv ices and the Gold Hill Grange will conduct the graveside serv ices. Interment will be in the Gold Hill I. O. O. F. cemetery. Rivtriid Dial 4960 FIVE YEAR TERM Roger Clayton Marsh. 22. and Eugene Warren James, 23. were sentenced to terms not to exceed five years each in the state peni tentiary by Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna today. The youths were arrested last week by Portland police at re quest of the Jackson county sheriff's office and made a full signed statement admitting a number of robberies in Medford and Portland. They were em ployed at a Medford hotel dur ing which time they entered a number of Medford residences and stole liquor, guns, rings and cash. All of the loot except the liquor, which had been con sumed and sold, and the cash was recovered, according to the sheriff's office. They were to be taken to Salem today by Deputy Sheriff Vern Smith, who will present extradition papers to Gov. Earl Snell tomorrow to bring Robert Ben' Merrill, wanted on a jail break charge, from Los Angeles to Medford. Francis M. Neff Is Named Director Of Long Beach Clinic Francis M. Neff, D.O., is di- rector of a newly-established Long Beach Polyclinic, accord ing to word received by his mother. Mrs. B. F. Neff, 217 West Second street, recently. Dr. Neff left Medford about 10 years ago. He is a graduate of Medford high school and Southern Ore gon College of Education. The survey revealed that 43 business organizations In the United States now boast mem bership In the Billion-Dollar club compared with 32 on Dec. 31, 1941, short time after the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. At this time last year, billionaire enterprises numbered 41. Metropolitan Life Insurance company, the study showed, led the list of billion-dollar organiza tions for the second successive year. The company, one of nine insurance companies to make the billion-dollar grade, reported total resources of $6,995,450,571.
