1 1 LOCAL and PERSONAL Fire Run City firemen were called to the home of Pat Lar son, 832 Minensota avenue, last nftfht in pxtineuish a sawdust fire in the basement of the Lar ton residence. No damage was reported by firemen. Cu Stolen N. J. Rindt report ed to city police yesterday that SO gallons of gas were stolen last week from a logging truck park ed at Fourth street and River side avenue. Another ten gallons were reported stolen last night. ' Meeting Changed Members ot Nevita Social club are asked to meet at the Central Point school Friday at 9:30 a. m. to assist in canning for the school lunch nroeram this year, rather ? than at one of the member's -homes as previously pianea. ' Mtrs' Hera Mrs. Paul Meyers and son, Stephen, and daughter, Mardi. are in Medford as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Clay for the present, and plan to make their home in the city. Mr. Meyers is a lieutenant in the navy, stationed at Seattle, Wash. ,: Office Ransacked O. V. Mey ers reported to city police this morning that his office, at Ninth and Bartlett streets, was broken into sometime last night and thoroughly ransacked, officers said today. Meyers reported that a few wrenches and pliers were tnissing. I In Northern Pacific Wallace R. McConnell, seaman 2c, of Shady Cove, is a member of a 6-inch gun crew aboard a heavy cruiser now operating in the northern Pacific after several bombardments of Jap-held is- .lands, according to word from his ship. . Permits To Build Applica tions for building permits were filed yesterday at the office of ' the city superintendent by the following: Fred Powers, 726 West 14th street, $4500, erect new residence and garage; D. E, Hayes, 1307 Queen Anne avenue, $250, reshingle residence and P, C. Denhof, 205 North Holly street, S80, for general repairs to a residence. Auto Damaged An automo bile operated by Douglas Park- hurst, route 2, was severely damaged yesterday afternoon when It turned over on Crown street, an accident report filed with city police states. Accord ing to the report Parkhurst lost control of the car while driving west, and passengers in the auto, Margie Fierling, Talent, and Vir ginia Brown, were uninjured Meekers Return Mayor and Mrs. C. A. Meeker and daughter returned yesterday from a month's vacation In Chicago, Cedar Rapids, Milwaukee, Lud Ington, Mich., Sheboygan and Macinae island. The Meekers re turned to Chicago from Macinae Island by boat, and to Meaford by way of Seattle. The family visited relatives on the trip, and Mayor Meeker attended to busi ness in Chicago. Nya Horn Lt. Col. Stephen Nye arrived home last Thursday for a ten days leave with his wife and sons at the family home, 818 West 10th street, be fore reporting to Ft. Lewis, Wash., to receive a discharge from the army. Lt. Col. Nye. in the army since January, 1342, has been stationed in England and Belgium with the transpor tation corp. His parents. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Nye, reside In Talent. ... Visits Son J. M. Payne, Sams Valley, returned Friday from Walla Walla, Wash., where he visited his son, T5 Guy E. Payne, a patient at McCaw gen eral hospital. The corporal's wife, Doris, and son, Roy, who accompanied Payne to Walla Walla, remained in Washington. T5 Payne was injured in ac tion with the 11th armored divi sion in Austria. His mother, Mrs. W. H. Bradley, resides at Long Beach, Calif. Knights Arrive Mrs. E. L. Knieht and two daughters, Mrs. William Glennle Bnd Sally, have arrived In Medford to Join Mr Knight, representative of the veterans' administration who opened his office last week in the post office building. The family will live at 129 S. Holly street, and Sally will enter Med ford high school as a senior stu dent next month. On Furlough Pfc. Edward H. McLean, just returned from Italy where he served with the 10th mountain division, is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. McLean, 227 S. Oakdale avenue. Examiner Coming A travel ing examiner of operators and chauffeurs will be at the KP hall Friday and Saturday fiom 9 a. m. to 5 D. m. Those u-ishine permits or licenses to drive cars are asked to get in touch with the examiner during these hours. Unit Cited Cpl. E. A. Bliss of Prospect, with other men. of the 101st airborne division on the western front in Europe, now wears the ribbon of the distin guished unit citation, the only division so honored in the his tory of the American army, ac cording to a release from his headquarters. The award, for extraordinary heroism and gal lantry was made to the men in recognition of their stand at Bastogne, Belguim, last Decem ber. To Ecuador Miss Carol Sny der, a teacher at Medford senior high school for the past three years, will teach this year at the Centro Ecuatoriano Norteameri cano, a center in Ecuador where South American citizens gather to study North American lan guage and customs. Miss Snvder left Medford Aug. 1 for Wash ington, D. C, to complete ar rangements for the trip on a grant-in-aid from the U. S. de partment of state, through the division of cultural cooperation. She left Miami, Fla., Aug. 20, flying to Ecuador. Receive Medal Mrs. Mar jorie Lunsman received on V-J day the purple heart medal awarded posthumously to her husband, Pfc. Harvey H. Luns man, who was killed while serv ing with the 96th infantry divi sion on Okinawa last May 22. Mrs. Lunsman and their three- year-old daughter, Sharon, live at 728 King street, and her par ents are Robert Cook and Mrs. Josie Cook, both of Medford. Pfc. Lunsman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey L. Lunsman, Sr., and a seven year old brother live in Oakland, Calif. Navy Officer Home Lt. Com mander Richard S. Roberts, USN, arrived home on leave Tuesday, following two years with Halsey's fleet in the Pacific and service in the Atlantic prior to that. The officer, who wears the bronze star, presidential unit citation, commendation citation, and ribbons for the Philippine defense and liberation, Okinawa Iwo Jima, submarine warfare. American theater, and the Pa cific theater ribbon with nine bronze battle stars, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Roberts, 32 Rose avenue. Com mander Roberts spent a week with his brother, Lt. Dale Rob erts, USN, and wife at their home In San Francisco, before coming to Medford. In the navy nine years, he will report to Jacksonville, Fla., on expiration of a 38 day leave. Prospect Prospect, Aug. 23 (Special) Mrs. Chas. B. Broomf ield was hostess for the 20-30 club, for the August meeting. A social aft ernoon was enjoyed after the business meeting, and later re freshments were served to Mrs. Ellle Jane Lewis, of Turlock, Calif., Mrs. Price Shafer of Med ford, Mrs. Lewis L. Jantzer, Mrs. Ben Haynes and daughters, Con nie May and Joyce, Mrs. Everett Shafer, Mrs. Ralph Lacy. Mrs. R. Ceford Garroute, and Mrs. Broomfleld. ' Mr. and Mrs. Walter Chad wlck of Oakland, Calif., arrived here Aug. 20, and are visiting a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dana F. Cushing. Sunday guests at the home of (Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Fanger were ! Mr. and Mrs. Frank Denton of Fort Klamath, and their son, Sgt. Delbert Denton, of the U. S. ; M. C, who has just returned from the south Pacific after 32 I months service there. Mrs. Den ton is Mrs. Fanger's aunt. Other recent guests at the Fanger home were their niece and nephew, Marilyn and .Gerald Fanger of Medford, who spent a week here. According to word received here, Pvt. Delbert Spain, former Prospect resident who Is now stationed on Luzon, has been transferred from the infantry to the engineers, and is driving a large bulldozer in a road con struction project. Pvt. Spain drove one of the logging "cats" for the Lewis Jantzer Logging Co. here, before his Induction last fall. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dole and children, Glenna Lee and Gary, moved to Redding, Calif., last week, where the former has em ployment as a lumber grader at a mill at Anderson. Norman" Jantzer, 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jant zer, sustained a broken leg, and minor scratches and bruises, Aug. 18, when struck with the top of a dead oak tree, that was knocked off by a limb from a tree that Mr. Jantzer was fall ing. While hurrying to aid the little boy, who was unconscious for several minutes, Jantzer got his right leg caught between two stumps and the crosscut saw in such a manner that three of the saw teeth penetrated the flesh to the bone above the kriee. They were taken to the Com munity hospital in Medford, where they were given medical care until Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. R. Ceford Gar- route Bnd children, Glenda and; Duane, attended a family reun ion at Cottage Grove recently. Mr. Garroute's mother returned here with them and spent sev eral days visiting. Sgt. Charles Cleveland, for mer Prospect resident, called on old friends here, Aug. 18. Sgt. Cleveland is a paratrooper, and returned recently from Europe, where he was hospitalized sev eral weeks from wounds receiv ed In action. Cleveland is spend ing his furlough with his ptr ents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cleve land at Azalea. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dits worth motored to Selma, Aug. 18, and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Al Bedingfield. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hedgpeth and son Robin, and grandson, Lee Colllngwood, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Pitchford and daughters. Avalyne and Nadine, returned last week from several days of outing at Crescent City and Smith River. Miss Sharon Vanderwal, stu dent of Northwestern School of Commerce, in Portland, is spend ing her vacation here with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Slagle. Local residents celebrated the end of the war with the blowing of mill whistles, and later in the evening a street dance was en Joyed. The following day was declared a holiday and a major ity of the people from here went fishing and picnicking to the lakes. . Miss Callecn Moore returned to her home here after spend ing the past five weeks with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gentry at Yakima. Saturday night and Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Clemens were Capt. and Mrs. Glenn Ballou and daughters.
