LEGION TO ALTER r E E Indianapolis, Aug. 18 fU.P.) The American Legion, opening a drive to enroll thousands of World War II veterans, an nounced today that eligibility rules would be changed to per mit all service men to become members as soon as the war of ficially has ended- Previously, only discharged veterans could join the Legion' National Commander Edward N. Scheiberling predicted that World War II service men would "take the Legion over," outnumbering World War I mem bers four to one. He said the new members could alter the charter to allow more political activity if they wished. Present national membership figures in the Legion include 1,200,000 World War I veterans and approximately 5 0 0,0 0 0 World War II veterans. 6,700 EUROPEAN 6 Napoleonic Flags Returned to France Paris. Aug. 18 (U.R) Six Napoleonic flags which the Ger mans captured in the Franco Prussian war and failed to gite back under the Versailles treaty were returned to France today by Gen. George S. Patton in ceremonies in the flag room of Les Invalides museum. ' The flags were recovered by Patton's Third army Bavarian campaign. The general was without his pearl-handled pistols but wore a varnished helmet. NEWSPRINT HOPE Toronto. Aug. 1 8 (U.R) The Toronto Financial Post will say tomorrow that Canadian paper mills may be able to make a "modest" increase in shipments of newsprint to the United States In the last quarter of this year. Aug. 18 U.R) Redeployment officials said today that 6.700 American j troops who have the highest number of adjusted credit rat ing points will be called intoi Mediterranean theater replace-i ment depots immediately to be; shipped to the United Stales! this month. Except for troops declared es-j sential in the occupation as:' specialists, all men with 100 or more points will be Included in the shipments. j If these troops fail to fill the quota, redeployment officials will fill the number from 05-j pointers and up. Eight per cent ' of the 6,700 will be officers. No Early Lifting Newsprint Ration Washington, Aug. 18 (U.R) A War Production Board official said today that there are no im mediate prospects for lifting re strictions on newsprint.
