r IN MID AIR OVER TEXAS JOL L S 18 Collision At Night Visible for 60 Miles 'Whole Coun try Lighted Up' Weatherford, Tex., Aug. 18 U.R) Eighteen men died in the mid-air crash of two B-29 Super forts last night. Two crew members were In jured They were hurled from the disintegrating planes and pulled their parachute ripcords to float to earth. The collision was visible 60 miles away. Sheriff Jake Long of Parker county said he did not see the actual crash but added that "the whole country was lighted up just as if you hpd turned on the lights." Wreckage and bodies were strewn over an area of 10 miles. Four bodies were recovered to day in widely separated spots in this area. Both planes were flying very high Douglas Gibbs of Weather ford, reported. "You could barely hear the motors," he said. "One was fly ing northeast, the souther south west. I noticed only one light on each of the planes." Gibbs said he heard no explo sion when the planes collided. Six pieces of wreckage floated down "looking more like me teors than anything else." He said there was a tremen dous explosion that shook his house as the principal piece of wreckage from one of the planes struck southwest of the town. One of the two injured airmen said ho knew nothing about what happened. He said he was thrown from the disintegrating plane and pulled his rlpcord. REROUTED TO U. S. Marseille, Aug. 18 U.PJ Three American troop trans ports, carrying 7,043 men and completely loaded ready to sail to the Pacific, were rerouted to to the United States yesterday after receiving last minute changes in sailing orders. The shipments Included 40 service and supply organizations which served a relatively short period in the European theater of opera tions. The transports were the USS H. H. Y. of the Senate War Inves tigating Committee said tonight that there appears to be no rea son why the army should not lower the discharge age to 35. The army recently lowered the age from 40 to 38. "No effort should be spared to return the older men to civilian life at the first opportunity," Mead said. He also said he hoped plans to discharge 7.500, 000 servicemen in the next 18 months were conservative estimates. C.A.T. SCHOOLS ENDED Washington, Aug. 18 (U.R) The war department announced today that all army civil affairs training schools with the excep tion of the one at the University of Virginia will be clased by Aug. 21.
