Sec ond place was won by Barbara Powell, and third honors by Helen Harnish, both of the Eagle Point club. In the same contest, visitors group, No. 1, Clara Mae Bigham, Antelope, was first; Phyllis Ca hail, Antelope, second, and Ann Padgham, Roxy Ann, third. Group 2 winners were: Wayne Smith, Table Rock, first; Betty Robertson, Talent, second; and Richard Bile, Sams Valley, third. Ralph Humphrey, Reese Creek, carried off top honors in the beef showmanship contest, with Joan Conner and Thora Mil lard, second and third, all of the Reese Creek club. For visitors, Clara Mae Big ham, who was awarded the beef showmanship championship at the Antelope district fair the week previous, repeated her per formance. Bernice Bigham was second, and Walter Cahail, third, also of the Antelope club. Thora Millard, Reese Creek was first in the beef fitting con test, with Ralph Humphrey, also of Reese, second. Dolph W. Guycr of the army infantry, according to word received here by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ciuyer of 319 Portland avenue. Guyrr entered the army before Pearl Harbor, and has been over seas over two years. His wife and son live at Arcadia, Calif. The citation accompanying the award states: "During fighting in China town in Manila, an infantry com pany was surrounded on three sides by fires set by Japanese, and the enemy were employing mortar, machine gun, and rifle fire in an effort to anniliate the trapped men. Heavy casualties had been inflicted, and it was imperative that they be evacuat ed as quickly as possible because the fires were closing in. "Sgt. Guycr made four trips into the flaming area as he assist ed two of his comrades and help ed carry three others from the trapped fort. As he went through charred rubble and climbed over paving block barricades, Sgt. Ciuyer was constantly subjected to intense enemy fire. Green, former tech nical sergeant in the army am phibious engineers, arrived in the city August 15 after serving 31 months in the Pacific theater Most of this time was spent in Australia, New Guinea, New Britain, and Luzon in the Philip pines. One of his most unusual assignments, aside from the reg ular construction of ships and bridges and roads, was the con struction of quarters for Eleanor Roosevelt, during her seven-hour stop on one of the islands. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Green, 1014 West Tenth, in Med ford, and prior to his entering the army, he was employed by the Monarch Seed & Feed. KNIFE AND FORK Ration-Free Shoe Sale Date Changed A change in date on the OPA ration-free shoe sale period was reported today by the district office. The release began Fri day, Aug. 17, instead of Aug. 27 as originally planned, and will end Saturday, Sept. 29 rather than Oct. 13. The change was made to allow dealers to sell out large stocks of summer footwear Special approval from the dis trict office is not needed for dealers to sell men's and wom en's shoes included in the re lease, but OPA requires that no children's shoes be included and retail price must not exceed I $3.50. 1 LIST JNCREASES In the near future. Over 50 charter members had been recorded in the local Knife and Fork club organization upon the return Friday of E. E. Schlotz, executive field director for the Associated Clubs, from Denver. He indicated this re sponse is such that ballots for nine directors will be sent out the first of the week to all mem bers of record. The directors elect their offi cers from their own number, in cluding a president, one or more vice-presidents, and a secretary treasurer. The office of secretary-treasurer is permitted filled outside the directorate. Directors serve on a basis of one-third re tiring each year in most of the clubs. Josephine County Will Have School Building Program Josephine county school bud get for the ensuing school year was passed Thursday following a school election. The budget, which was placed before the peo ple because of a new county unit system which exceeded the six per cent limitation, includes amounts to cover the building ot an eight-room school at Kerby and an extension of three class rooms and large gymnasium and auditorium at Jerome Prairie school. A meeting of the school board will be held Monday in Grants Pass court house to decide on the immediate course of action concerning the budget, according to William Laing, local archi tect, who has drawn up plans for the new buildings- the shores of the sea.
