PACKING PLANTS WILL BE IN FULL Most packing plants of the city were operating today and all will be by tomorrow. Most o the workers reported with a few still observing the second of the V-J day holidays. German prisoners of war and Mexican Nationals were busy in the or chards. Reter Fruit company, Amer ican Fruit company, Myron F. Root, Pinnacle plant No. 1 and the S.O.S' plants were among those underway. Grocery stores, many restaur ants, service stations and a num ber of other businesses were open today- Some eating places closed for both holidays. Yes terday, three places were serving meals and were crowded with lines forming at some restaur ants. End of gasoline rationing saw many people make trips to country spots for meals. Banks, the court house and barber shops were closed. Raymond R- Reter of Reter Fruit company said the local labor situation "was not too bad," though prisoners of war and Mexican agricultural help saved the day. He described local labor "as most generous." He said no transient labor was coming into the valley now. T5 Donald Snyder Serves in Germany T5 Donald Snyder, son of Mrs. V. ROGUE RIVER PACKING CORP. Telephone 3982 GAITY TOUCHES PAROLE VIOLATOR Los Angeles, Aug. 16, (U.R) A 20-year-old parole violator from Boston turned himself in to po lice today because "something about the celebration last night with everyone so friendly, seem ed to get me where it hurts." Joseph Burns, sought by Bos ton police since 1943 when he left that city for Honolulu, told how he had mixed with the "wrong crowd" soon after his medical discharge from the mar ines three years ago. "I got to thinking about my girl, and how I couldn't ever get married if I was scared of being arrested. I had been lucky get ting around the cops before but it couldn't last. "When the sun came up this morning, I was all alone. I can't stand it any longer, so I want to give up," Burns told police. He is being held in jail for Boston authorities. Blind Mechanic Is Whiz on Motors Of Intricate Planes San Bernardino, Cal. (U.R) Airplane mechanic Ernest T. Vil lalovoz has never seen the huge engines upon which he works at the Air Technical Service com mand. Yet his foreman, C. K. Eversole, names him as one of his best men. Villalovoz is blind. His nimble fingers, however, know every part of the great power plants and quickly find proper tools as he works on the disassembly line. Back in 1919 Villalovoz was an auto mechanic, when a spark destroyed the sight in his right eye. After an operation failed to restore its vision, he gradual ly lost sight in the other eye. But Villalovoz refused to recog nize a' handicap and adjusted himself to a new life. Villalovoz needed only a few days to learn the intricate air craft work. HIGH COST OF IRE Louisvile, Ky. (U.R) Because passing automobiles were splash ing water on him where he worked, C. O. Williams of Jef ferson county tossed a rock through the windshield of a track.
