M.D. Readers should eddress Inquiries toi Dr. William Brady. 265 CI Cemlno. Bererly Hills. CalU. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE DELIVERS HER PET PEEVE In June 1935, I graduated from high school, and by a bit of luck I was valedictorian, having the highest standing in my class of forty one. As vale dictorian I had to write and deliver my so long you know. I got through it somehow, but how I wish I I nVrn islam J chosen my Dr. Brady own subject for that little farewell address! I could have told 'em a few things. If you are still reading, Dr. Brady, I'll tell you. I have a pet peeve. Why In the world don't they teach girls in high school, boys, too, as far as that goes, the sensibilities of home-making, dietetics, baby care, how to budget income and manage money, and the practical part of hygiene, prevention of disease, domestic medicine, such things as you teach so well through your column, for people who have the gumption to read and heed? Most girls marry a few years after they leave school and their high school education proves of little use to them in the business of living. I did learn to cook certain things in high school fudge, fancy cake, that was all. Cook ing meat and vegetables was just not refined or suitable for school girls, I suppose. As for canning I had to learn that through the newspapers too. In high school I learned to sew French seams; no shortcuts or quick methods to make a child's dress in an hour or so. I have two lovely daughters (both born by Caesarean section) and I intend they shall know these things as well as I can teach them. But it does seem to me that practical things like that should be taught in school, and then many homes might be saved if girls knew these fundamental things when they begin married life. I could go on and on . . .(Mrs. C. F. A.) I applaud everything you say, Mrs. A. If I had the necessary political pull or backing I'd like to write a series of text books for use in the grade schools and high schools, but without the neces sary Influence to get textbooks accepted for use I fear it would be love's labor lost. IN THIS REGION Seattle, Aug. 15--(U.R) Told nine weeks ago by a Santa Cruz, Cat., ration board they could not have gasoline for the trip, a 55-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Nel lie McDonald, and her daughter, Mrs. Francis N. Davis, arrived here today, each 25 pounds light er, having travelled 1,000 miles on horseback. "We averaged 15-38 miles a day, the horses wore out three pairs of shoes, thinned down a lot, and once we went three days without eating when we tried to shortcut through Tiller Pass over Devil's Knob, between Medford and Canyonville, Ore. But I guess we are even with that gasoline board now," Mrs. McDonald said. On the leg north from Yreka, Cal., the pair did 38 miles in one day "because we were afraid to get out of the saddle because there were so many bears around," Mrs. McDonald said Clad in levis, jackets and som- TAKE IT EASY LODGE Under New Management Chicken and Steak Dinners All Kind oi Sandwiches Music by Smokey, Danny & Blacky Open Every Nlte Except Tues.
