Return From Vacation Ed ward and Donald Demmer, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Demmer, have just returned from a two months vacation in southern California where they visited their grandmother in San Car los. The boys report having a wonderful time visiting the zoo in San Francisco, and other in teresting sights. ... Hoppe Promoted Walt Hoppe, Medford dentist who has been stationed at Barnes General hospital, Vancouver, Wash., for the past year and ten months, has been promoted from captain to the rank of major, according to word received here by friends. Major Hoppe is chief of the oral surgery branch at the hospital. His application for overseas duty was rejected due to his type of specialized work. He is in charge of the department where all maxillo-facial wounds are treat ed, on return from battle fronts for treatment and rehabilitation. Hoppe is on a 30 day leave now, visiting other hospitals on the coast which handle that type of work. Sands, Trail, were damaged considerably last night when they collided on Main street and Riverside avenue, an accident report filed with city police states. Another report states that slight damage was caused Tuesday to a car operat ed by Janet Day, 204 Crater Lake avenue, in collision with an auto driven by Mrs. Mable Jacobs, 35 Myrtle street. ... Ed ward Lyle White arrived in Medford Monday from Marana field, Ariz., to spend a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shannon White, 20 Ross court. Two other sons of the Whites, Carroll N. White, S 1c, G.M., and T5 Arvid N. White, met re cently, for the first time in four years, aboard ship in the South Pacific. T5 Arvid White is ex pected home soon. ... Pfc. Lyon Home Pfc. Leon ard Lyon: Jr., is spending a 90 day furlough in Medford at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lyon, 621 Alberts street. Pfc. Lyon, who was wounded in action in the Euro pean theater, is stationed at Mc Caw general hospital. Walla, Walla, Wash. Since his arrival in the city, Lyon has received two of his last year's Christmas packages and 19 letters forward ed from the European area. ... Hemmerling Home Cpt. Gif ford Hemmerling arrived home a few days ago on a 30 day fur lough to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hemmerling, 238 S. Holly street, after 30 months duty with the 57th bomb wing in the Mediterranean area. Made up of B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, the wing served through the African and Italian campaigns. Hemmerling was a member of the 340th bomb group, which made it's last mis sion April 28, and was twice cited by the war department for distinguished unit service. Rec ords made by the Mediterranean allied air force include the drop ping of more than 650,000 tons of bombs, and shooting down in the air of more than 8,700 en emy aircraft. SHOWS INCREASE E Since the start of operation of the Medford War Nursery, 22 Geneva street, on April 1, 1943, a total of 490 children have been cared for at the center, and the daily average registration has increased from 18 to 45 children, according to Mrs. Ethel Ten nant, principal. Designed to provide adequate care for pre-schooi age children whose mothers are gainfully employed, the organization is a war project, non-sectarian and under supervision of the Med ford Public School System. Chil dren eligible for enrollment must be two to six years old and in good health, and extension of age limits and hours of operation beyond the usual 7 a. m. to 6 p. m. are allowed during fruit harvest season from August through December, Mrs. Ten nant reports. No provision is made for care of sick children at the school, and parents must furnish trans portation to and from the nur sery. Fees are based on a half day, daily, or weekly basis. irrigaTionTeak over in valley Watermaster Clinton Smith re ports the peak of the irrigation season has been passed in the valley and with proper care the irrigation season will end better than expected. Farmers are now finishing their second crop of hay and getting ready to irri gate for the third crop. One more heavy irrigation of late pear orchards will be needed, Smith, states. Growers under small stream irrigation and dry land farmers, aided by the May rains procured good crops, the watermaster states. The small stream flow held up better than expected and July thunderstorms in the high hills helped. GEORGIA'S NEW CODE ABOLISHES POLL TAX Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 9 (U.R) Georgia today had adopted a new constitution, permanently abolishing the poll tax, setting up a merit system for state env ployes and placing the state's agencies under strict budget con trol. The new code was Installed by an overwhelming majority in an election marked by a light vote yesterday.
