Oregonian Publisher Says
Atomic Age Means Race
Suicide In Next War
Portland, Ore., Aug. 8J.R)
Publisher Palmer Hoyt of the
Portland Oregonian today said
use of the atomic bomb means
there must be no more wars and
a world wide flow of free infor
mation is the only thing that can
save civilization.
Hoyt, former domestic direc
tor of the office of war informa
tion, said talk of a third world
war is equivalent to discussion
of race suicide.
Need Understanding
"When we entered yesterday
into the atomic age," Hoyt told
a Portland service club, "it be

Hoyt said great strides have
already been made in selling the
idea of international freedom of
news under the leadership of
President Hugh Baillie of the
United Press, General Manager
Kent Cooper of the Associated
Press and the American Society
of Editors.
"But these strides are not
enough," Hoyt added. "History
has made the accomplishment of
the objective essential. General
ly speaking the press of America
and of the British common
wealth of nations has not accept

program. It is imperative that
the press does not shirk its vital
responsibility."

Former neighbors here of Mr. i

R EXCESSIVE ACIDITY
you provide stamped self ad
dressed envelope, one of the
most frequent complaints of the
American public is excessive
acidity.
For either occasional or fre
quent or daily use as an antacid
to neutralize the excess of acid
in the stomach and relieve the
discomforts attending acidity
heartburn, water-brash, "gas,"
empty pain or hunger pain, acid
eructations, sense of fulness or
bloating after a meal, yes, and
the irritability and crankiness
that often accompanies hypera
cidity, a great many persons with
Yankee stomach have found discs
of calcium carbonate and magne
sium trisilicate most satisfactory
The combination of approximate
ly 7 grams of the prepared chalk
with 3 grains of magnasium tri
silicate seems to be more effica
cious than a much larger does of
chalk (calcium carbonate) alone.
Correspondents will please re

prescribe medicine, diet or other
treatment in any case.
