Applegate Leaves First Lt. Donald W. Applegate left last week to report for duty Aug. 14 at Santa Monica, Calif. The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Apple gate, 518 Palm street, Applegate was last pilot of a fortress in the 15th air force. He was a Ger man prisoner of war for 13 months, and on his release April 29 was returned to this country for a 60 day furlough. Apple gate holds the bronze star, air medal and oak leaf cluster. ... Fierling Commissioned Word has been received by Mr- and Mrs. Chauncey P. Fierling of Ashland, that their son, Gerald Wayne, 20, was commissioned a second lieutenant in June, after attending o f f i c e r s' candidate school at Fontaineblcau, France in an old castle home once occu. pied by Henry III, IV and Napo. leon. Son Born News of the birth of a boy, their first child, to Mr. and Mrs. Willard Eberhart of Seattle, has been received here by Mrs. Eberhart's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gilstrap, 35 Geneva street. The child was born at 11:15 p. m. Saturday Aug. 4- Mrs. Eberhart is the former Ernestine Gilstrap. Mr. Eberhart was formerly managing editor of the Ashland Daily Tid ings, and is now with the United Press Association as manager of the Seattle bureau. ... Receives Award Pfc. Wil liam W. Croucher, 20. soij of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Croucher, route 2, was recently awarded the combat infantryman's badge and good conduct medal while serving with an infantry regi ment engaged in mopping up op erations against the remnants of Japanese forces on a West Pa cific outpost, according to word from his headquarters. Croucher was a truck driver prior to his induction at Ft. Lewis, Wash in March, 1944. He received bas ic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., and left for overseas duty in December, 1944. He also holds the Asiatic-Pacific theatre rib bon and the bronze battle star. FIVE DIE IN FIRE Detroit, Aug. 6 (U.R) Two children and three aged women were dead today following a fire and explosion at the Evangelical home for orphans and old peo ple. More than 200 others, ap proximately 125 of them chil dren, escaped from the burning building last night. The United States has made an agreement with Argentina for the purchase of exportable sur plus vegetable oil seeds, flax seed, linseed oil and linseed meal In return for fuel oil. SERVICE Phone 2751 AWARD OF MEDAL Posthumous award of the bronze star to Charles J. Wil liams, route 1, box 550C, for his son," Marshall K. Williams, tech nician fifth grade, who was kill ed in action in Germany March 23, 1945, was made this morning by Col. John R. Young in his office at post headquarters, Camp White. Williams was graduated from Medford high school with the class of 1941, and, until his en listment in he army in 1942, worked at Camp White. He had been overseas since February, 1943. 'His body was buried in France, according to report. The citation accompanying the award states: "For heroic achievement in combat on March 23. 1945, in Germany. T5 Williams was driving an armored car entering the city as the advance element of his platoon, when he suddenly en countered an enemy group of ap proximately company strength. While the gunner sprayed the street with his machine gun, T5 Williams drove his car into the midst of the hostile group, un til he was suddenly stopped when the enemy pushed a wa gon across his path and a ba zooka shell hit his vehicle and killed him instantly.
