July 22. 1945 NORTHWEST GOLF TOURNAMENT SET Portland, Ore., July 21 (U.R) The Pacific northwest pro-amateur golf championships oldest annual event of the region will be played Aug. 24 in Portland, Eddie Hogan, Riverside Golf and Country club professional, an nounced today. ' It will be the richest pro-amateur event ever held in this area, offering a total of $2,000 in war bonds as prizes. ' Hogan said entries will close Aug. 17 for the 36-hole "best ball" tournament. Approxi mately 30 teams are expected to take part. The meet Is being backed fin ancially by the Pacific northwest section of the Professional Golfers association, Riverside Golf and Country club, and Rob ert A. Hudson, sponsor of the Portland open tournament. New York, July 21 (U.R) The Detroit Tigers and Philadel phia Athletics broke the Ameri can league record for the elaps ed time of a game and tied the league record for number of in nings when they played a four- hour and 48-minute, 24-inning 1 to 1 tie today. The Major league record Is five hours and 19 minutes for the 26-lnning 1 to 1 tie between Brooklyn and Boston in the Na tional league In 1920. Twenty-slx-year-old Less Muel ler went the first 19 innings for Detroit today and was relieved in the 20th by Paul (Dizzy) Trout, who made his second re lief appearance in two days since hospital treatment for lumbago Russ Christopher, Connie Mack's ace, started for Philadel phia and gave up the lone run. He was relieved by "Jittery" Joe Berry In the 14th and Berry fin ished. The Tigers got 11 hits in 81 times up against the A s f ling ers. Philadelphia got 16 hits In 84 times at bat, with Bob Estalella the game's hitting star with five hits In 10 trips. An error by Rudy York put Dick Slcbcrt on base for the A's in the fourth, he moved to third on a double by Estalella and scored on Buddy Rosar's single. Detroit scored in the seventh on a walk to Roy Cullenblne, a sin gle by York and an infield out. The surging St. Louis Browns Jumped from sixth to fourth place today by defeating Boston, 4 to I, while the Chicago White Sox lost to New York. Flashes of the old-time Yankee power were seen today as the New Yorkers blasted 13 hits, In cluding three home runs, to hum bit the White Sox; 12 to 3. Wash ington came from behind to sub due Cleveland, 7 to 4. In the National league, the leading Chicago Cubs hopped on Rookie Dick Mauney for a 9 to 3 victory over the Philadelphia Phils. Lack of control cost Vernon Kennedy of the Cincinnati Reds his chances of victory over the New York Giants ei he dropped a 6 to 3 decision. Big Bill Lee of the Boston Braves and Nick Strinccvich of the Pittsburgh Pirates each turn-' ed in a fine pitching Job as their teams divided a doublchcadcr. Lee won the first game, 5 to 1. Tommy Holmes took the Major league home run lead when he hit his 16th. Strinccvich allowed only six hits in winning, 3 to 1. The announcement followed completion of a purchase of the Salem franchise in the Western International Baseball club and the George D. Waters field. The purchase price was not an nounced. Milton Klepper, general man ager of the Porltand club, said the Western International league directors have met in Seattle to make a decision on reopening in 1946. Klepper will represent Salem at the gathering of directors of the other clubs of the circuit Vancouver, Tacoma and Spokane as well as with representa tives of other Washington towns. Waters field Is considered one of the finest minor league base ball parks' in the country, Beaver officials pointed out. A farm club has long been contem plated by the Portland club, and steps toward the development of young players have already been taken. Next week's games mark end of the city league play and the JayCces must vln their Tuesday night game with Ordnance Shop if they hope to get a place in the Shaughnessy play-offs set for July 31 and August 3. Littrell Parts scored a run in the first inning, one in the third four in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to bring the JayCees winning splurge to an abrupt halt. Chungking, July 21 (U.R) Four Chinese armies today crushed Japanese counter - at tacks and hurled a spearhead to within one mile of Kweilin, the largest of 11 U. S. air base cities seized by the enemy last year. The liberation of the three big airfields around the Kwangsi provincial capital appeared im minent as. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's, troops pressed toward the city from the west, north west, north and south. One force, in a 10-mile gain, advanced beyond Llangklang and reached Tachiaotsun, less than one mile to the west. Today's communi que did not mention a Chinese force that reportedly entered the city's southern suburbs several days ago. "Our troops have totally frus trated all enemy counter-attacks at points around the outer perl meter of Kweilin," the communi que announced. Gen. Tang En Po, commander of Chinese field forces who re cently forecast the liberation of Kweilin before the end of July, left for the front to direct the final assault.
