am bitterly prejudiced against
alcohol as liquor or beverage
and If I had my way it would be
available only on bona fide pre
scription by a reputable physi
cian. With that clearly understood
I'll add that I believe life would
be easier for a good many elder
ly persons to live, and those
same elderly people would ue
easier to live with, if they took
some beer, ale or wine regularly
every day.
How elderly must they be to
require such a solvent? .
Now that's what troubles me
now. Twenty years ago I thought
they might find a solvent bene
ficial when they passed sixty.
But now It doesn't seem to . me
that a person needs alcohol until
but remember how prejudiced
I am, and that I have been a
rabid teetotaler all my happy

High temperature in the val
ley, broken by an electrical
storm Tuesday night, have has
tened development of fruit crops
and necessitated heavy irrigat
ing in orchards this week. Cher
ries and berries are being picked
and establishment of a plant for
freezing and dehydrating fruits,
vegetables and berries here in
1948 now seems certain, the
Chamber . of Commerce states.
Several small fires were started
in forest areas by lightning Tues
day. Three Klamath Falls people
and a boy from Vancouver,
Wash., drowned in nearby lakes
this week, the first three at Lake
O' Woods and the latter at Dia
mond Lake. All were on outing
trips. Travel to Crater Lake Na
tional Park on July 4 was the
heaviest since beginning of the
war, although opening of the
rim road has been delayed.
In preparation for families of
an expected 27,000 servicemen
believed scheduled to arrive at
Camp White In the next few
months, a survey is being con
ducted in Medford to determine
extent of housing facilities avail
able. Don K. Bngley has been
transferred to Portland with the
General Petroleum Corp., and
James A. Stubblefleld was re
cently awarded $10 for an "Idea
for Victory,' a special punch, at
the Sacramento air technical
service command. Robert Ruck

ident. Howard Hobson, Univer
sity of Oregon basketball and
baseball coach, and A use Cor
nell were in Medford Tuesday.

sponse last Saturday to an offer

my playroom, where I had been
so rudely interrupted, in such a
state of fury that presently I
had to laugh at it myself. But
hold everything. The episode
was not over. The telephone
started Jangling again. Let it
Ja.ngle, I said to myself, trying
to pick up the subject I had been
working on. But it was no use.
I couldn't ignore the . racket.
When I answered, It was Mr.
So-and-So himself, trying to ex
plain the Inadvertent . . . and
I'm a little ashamed of what I
shouted at the man before I
slammed the receiver back on
the cradle. ,

graduated from the advanced in

school at Oceanside, Calif., and
is at the marine sea school at

First Lt. Max Hendon, Rich
ard Frederick Foster,- and Ran
son Webster have received hon
orable discharges from the serv
ice. Definite proof of the death of
Lt. Maurice J. Sample, reported
killed overseas last September
but not positively known by
other American fliers on the mis
sion to be dead, has been re
ceived. Two other crew mem
bers, German prisoners since
then, have returned to this coun
try with word of his death.
Awards received by local men
and announced this week in
clude the bronze stars given to
Cpl. Jack Bickler in Germany,
Lt. Col. Fred E. Rankin at Man
ila, Tech. Sgt. Benjamin F.
Sparks in the Philippines, Sgt.
Frank J. Hayner, topographic
engineer in the air corps in In
dia, and Cpl. Alfred R. Mercer,
with a bomb disposal squad in
France. Sgt. Charles L. Devlne
received the bronze star and two
battle stars In the Philippines.
First Lt. Lanse Pitts was pre
sented the air medal for flights
in the southwest Pacific area,
and Pfc. Kenneth E. Hood, sta
tioned in the Philippines, was
given the combat infantryman's
badge. .

moted to Captain on Tinian
island, and Donald Dale Cob
