THE DOCTOR JUST LAUGHS AT ME A girl 14 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs only 131 pounds, She says when she asks her doctor how she can stop growing or at least put on some more flesh the doc tor just laughs at her and says there is noth ing wrong. The mother of a 7 year old girl says the ,tll4 . le iiarv Dr. Brady argei wei g h s over 100 pounds now and keeps gaining. She is quite active and as healthy as can be. The mother asked her doctor about the child and the doctor just laughed at her and said it was what the child ate. These are fair Illustrations of a great many similar pleas for help that come in the mail from people everywhere. "The doctor just laughs at me." In many instances no doubt the doctor does not mean to laugh at the supplicant but rath er to laugh with him or her, try ing to get the supplicant In a more cheerful mood about his or her condition, since there is nothing the doctor can do about it. That Is all very well. The trou ble is that it might not be such a laughing matter if the doctor knew what to do and made a fair attempt to do it. Not that I have any notion of what a doctor could do to retard or stop growth in stature or height in any case. But I know, and every doctor knows, that in some cases stunted or delayed growth in stature or height can be stimulated or speeded up by suitable ductless gland hormone treatment particularly thyroid and pituitary hormones and by supplementing the diet -with cal cium and phosphorus and vita min D, in young persons who have not yet attained adult de velopment (particularly children or youths in their 'teens). Now, please, folks, don't ask me what ductless gland hor mones one should take I don't know. It is a question for your own physician to answer, and no one else. As for the obese child, in such cases, too, the doctor who knows his business will treat the child over a sufficient period to cor rect the disordered metabolism or if the family doctor cannot undertake such treatment he should refer the patient to a ON THE SPOT SERVICE Gall 4061, Ashland -Make Your Appointment Any Mechanical Work Bear Wheel Aligning New Chevrolet Motors Body and Paint Work Selby Chevrolet Co. It is at any rate the wrong time to laugh. This child's mother asked me for a pamphlet on How to Lose Weight. I'm glad to send that pamphlet to any adult who asks for it and includes stamped self addressed envelope. But I did not send it to this child's mother. I feared mother might try to put the child on a reducing regimen which would be dangerous in deed. It is always dangerous for a young person who has not yet attained adult development to attempt to restrict his or her diet in any way, without constant ob servation and advice of the pnysician. QUESTIONS is ANSWERS Rone Meal if human beings were to eat finely ground bone mixed with ground meat wouid they be able to digest the bone? Would it have harmful results, or could it have any beneficial results? . ' (D- H. M.) Answer Finely ground bone Is an excellent form of calcium phosphate for human beings, whose (relinedl diet is generally deficient in both calcium and phosphorus. So It would be bene ficial rather than harmful, if aome bone were mixed in the ground meat for human consumption. Blood Donor I donated blood at the Red Cross center recently, and they made an ap pointment for me to donate again eight weeks later. But a relative ad vises me not to donate blood oftener than every six months. (Mrs. R. W.l Answer Most donors give blood every six to eight weeks with Impun ity. If your relative fears it may cause anemia, there is no Justicatlon for that feai. Send ten cents and stamped self addressed envelope for booklet ''Blood and Health." (Copyright 1945 by John F.
