Which might have struck some as being funny, see ing the just-married look on their eager young faces. . And when, as their first move of pre paredness for their declining years, they bought a piece o brush land on an island, many thought sentiment, not practi cality, had ruled the choice. The years passed. Children came. The man stuck to his desk job. Sometimes they went to look at their "farm." They would build the house, they planned, on the slope overlook ing the bay. "Seems like we get old so slowly," the wife would wistfully say to her husband. "If I thought we could make it, we wouldn't wait unti". we are old," he would sometimes reply, And all this time the land, the so-fertile land waited; as did the big trees which would shelter the house they would build, once they were old. Sometimes the bay between the island and the mainland was a blue lagoon of serenity. It could wait had waited a long time. Again that stretch of water, as though irri tated at the man's delay, rolled and tossed and beat at the little island flinging the foam of its wrath high on the sandy slope. Twenty years came and went and still the man said they weren't old enough to go to the farm. Though successful at his work, yet he couldn't seem to save the sum he felt he needed for security before quitting his job and going to the farm. Then suddenly one day he said to his wife, his face impu dent, his voice whimsical, "Your husband has decided he's an old mam Let's go to the farm." She knew he wasn't old; it was just that he was as tired as she of waiting to grow old so they could go to the farm. He was not impractical: he would work "outside" two or three months during the winter, spend the rest of the time on the farm. "The way we planned, we'd be giving the dregs of our lives to the one thing we ve most desired. Much better that we go while still able to make our dreams come true." Such was his wise decision. I visited them not long ago; at their Island home in the San Juans of Puget Sound. The house they planned has been built. There was thick cream on fat strawberries. The so-fer tile soil was tossing up vege tables in prodigal abundance. So fragrant the roses! A thrush sang. A blue sky met a bluer lagoon. No more waiting. That means growing chil dren generally get insufficient vitamin D which is essential for normal absorption, assimilation and retention of calcium (and phosphorus) in the body. In a study of 162 children from two to 17 years old. It was found that the group re ceiving extra vitamin D had less than half as many cavities as the group receiving no extra vitamin D (other than the little they may have gotten in butter, cream, egg yolk, salmon). Today the same as 30 or 40 years ago, some dentists dismiss all appeals for better nutrition with the shopworn observation that of course we refined people nowadays can't eat the coarse foods our early ancestors or pre sent day savages eat, anfl so we must depend on toothbrush mas sage to give the teeth and games the exercise they would get mas ticating coarse foods, etc. In season and out I urge that all growing children should re ceive a daily ration of vitamin D and vitamin B-complex to supplement their diet, not mere ly to promote development of good teeth, but good posture, good bones, nerves, glands, vigor and vitality. The youngster from one to 18 years of age at least, should eat this D and B complex ration daily along with breakfast, or other meal. It is essential food, not medi cine. The only reason the youngster needs it in this form is because his or her food fails to supply it or, in the instance of vitamin D, because' the youngster is not sufficiently ex posed to sunshine or skyshine except perhaps in mid-summer. It is noticeable that atgreat many people who purport to be intelligent if not highly edu cated and well-to-do have very poor teeth or numerous teeth missing. In their misguided zeal to preserve their teeth by brush ing they convince themselves that they can get by without the services of the dentist. I merely ask why, oh, why do such people take such a squeamish attitude in reference to brushing the teeth and at the same time limp along with from one to a dozen teeth missing like tramps? Is it because some body has cruelly deceived them about the saving of the teeth, and now they no longer care?
