SOCIETY and CLUBS National, State Officers In City For League Meet For an exchange of Ideas and solutions to problems, board members of the Jackson County League of Women Voters met Thursday of last week with Miss Olive McKay, Washington, D. C, national organization secretary or the league, and Mrs. John Stark Evans, Portland, Oregon president. Miss McKay is on a tour of western local and state leagues. Miss McKay told of the pro jects and ideas now in use by various leagues she has visited and Mrs. Evans outlined some of the projects which the Oregon league will undertake this com ing year, and stated that her chief interest would, be in the expansion and strengthening of local Oregon leagues. The two women spoke at a . meeting which followed lunch eon at the home of Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, Veritas Orchard. It was brought out that the na tional league Is now primarily concerned with the problems of International peace and with va rious phases of the war-time food problem. The league worked to bring public understanding of the Dumbarton Oaks proposals and will now aid with the In terpretation of the charter drawn at San Francisco, it was stated. With this end in view, speakers will be brought to Medford by the local league. On the food project, the league has worked for understanding of the problems of food distribu tion in war-time and has co operated both locally and na tionally with OPA in the belief that food prices must be con trolled if inflation is to be pre vented, according to statements made at the meeting. Aya, Mrs. Richard Payne, Mrs. Dolph Phipps, Mrs. Eugene Thorndike, Mrs. William Bowerman, Mrs. George B. Dean, Mrs. Frank Humphrey, Mrs. Bren H. Starcher, Mrs. M. N. Hogan, Mrs. C. R. Brackett, Miss McKay, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Carpenter. Visitors Return 'After Stay Here Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hearn and amall daughter returned to their home in Portland Saturday after a visit here with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miksche and family, 407 West Jackson boulevard. Mrs. Hearn and Mrs. Miksche are sis ters. Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Hearn was guest of honor at a email bridge-luncheon given by Mrs. E. S. Degman at her home on Elm street. Birthday Dinner Gives For Venita Gardner Miss Venita Gardner celebrat ed her 12th birthday anniversary Tuesday with a family dinner. Present were Wilbur G. and Helen Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Murrey, Mrs. Clara Barry and the honored guest. Miss Gardner returned that day from a trip to Seattle where she visited relatives. Sojourners' Club Election Is Held At Last Session Mrs. Clarence Talbot Is the new president of Medford So journers' club, having been named to the office at election held by the club Thursday aft ernoon at the Girls' Community club. Mrs. Bruce Stewart was named first vice-president, Mrs. Jerry Dierdorff, second vice president; Mrs. Dyle Hood, secre tary, and Mrs. Robert Voegtly, treasurer. Retiring president is Mrs. Vincent Smith. Following the meeting cards wore played, with Mrs. B. C. Taylor, Mrs. Merton Lyster and Mrs. W. A. Allen winning bridge prizes and Mrs. Marrin Walker and Mrs. Bill Herron, pinochle prizes. Mrs. Hood also won a prize. Guests were Mrs. F. D. Schur itering, Mrs. R. T. 'McNichoJas, Mrs. W. A. Allen and Mrs. W. M. Thompson and prospective members present were Mrs. Henry Stahl, Sr., and Mrs. Lynn Robertson. Hostesses for the day were Mrs. L. L. Rentz, chairman, Mrs. Clarence Talbot and Mrs. S. D Begley. Class Initiated Into Auxiliary The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles held the regular monthly initiation class Thursday night with 10 candidates being initiated. Each candidate was presented a small American flag. After the Aerie and Auxiliary meetings the members enjoyed refreshments and a dance con cluded the evening. A $75 war bond was purchas ed by the Auxiliary June 29. A series of joint entertain ment programs are being planned for group with a half hour program every two weeks in addition ,to the dance. Bill Lawrence is chairman of the pro gram committee. Next program will be July 5 and all members are invited to come. Richeys Entertain For Sgt. Waldron Mr. and Mrs. Oi C. Sgt. and Mrs. Waldron, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Music and family, Mrs. John Gee and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Taylor. Social Worker Guest At Small Luncheon Miss Louise Sullivan, Red Cross psychiatric social worker from Klamath Falls, was a lun xhonn miest of Mrs. Harry Holmes, Modoc avenue, Satur day noon. A few Medford wom en interested in Miss suinvans work, were also guests for the luncheon. Wright, 60 North Orange street Officers Attend AAUW Conference Mrs. Robert W. Shepherd and Miss Helen Parish are in Cor vallis this week-end to attend a conference of state officers and branch presidents of the Ameri can Association of University Women in Oregon. Mrs. . Shep herd is the newly elected state secretary and treasurer and Miss Parish is president of the Med ford branch. The Corvallis meeting was called by Mrs. C. D. Winston, AAUW state president. Mrs. Justin Smith, retiring state chairman of international relations for the group, was un able to attend the meeting. Lady Lions' Club Holds Ceremony ' At Miller Home Installation of officers for the Lady Lions' club was held Tues day evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Miller, 617 Park street, following a dessert sup per. Mrs. C. C. Haggard con ducted the impressive candle light ceremonv in the fiarden of the Miller home, the flowers pro-1 viding an unusually beautiful setting. Mrs. N. D. Rowe was installed I president, Mrs. Al Selby, vice- president; Mrs. George Good- man, secretary, and Mrs. Tom! Flynn, treasurer. Retiring offi cers are Mrs. C'. C. Proctor, presi dent; Mrs. Frank RuiAz, vice president; Mrs. Frank Cullen, secretary, and Mrs. Rowe, treas urer. Mrs. Proctor was present ed a gift and both groups of of ficers were presented corsages. Fifteen members and one guest, Mrs. I. K. Johnson of Ber keley, were present. Mrs. John son Is visiting in Medford at the Haggard home. Shower to Honor Members of Circle Sunny Sisters circle of the Presbyterian church will spon sor a shower and tea Tuesday for Mrs. C. V. English, whose home was destroyed by fire re cently. The affair will be at the home of Mrs. David D. Rob erts, 32 Rose avenue, between the hours of 2:30 and 4:30 p. m. Friends and neighbors of Mrs. English are invited to attend the affair. 1 Mrs. Taylor Entertains Leisure Day Members Leisure Day club members were entertained for the last meeting at the home of Mrs. A. H. Taylor, 802 South Newton street. A covered dish luncheon was served at noon, a business session held and during the day Mrs. O. C. Richey waj presented with a birthday gift. Since the next meeting day occurs on the July Fourth holi day, the club members and their families will hold a picnic at Lithia Park, Ashland. Rector Will Attend Conference for Clergy The Rev. George R. Turney, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal church, will leave Thursday for Pullman, Wash., where he will attend a conference for clergy men at Washington State col lege. Medford Couple Announce Rites Held Last Month Friends of Miss Glenda'Maude Wenzel and Herbert Taevs, both of this city, will be interested in the announcement that the young couple was married on May 22 at Reno, Nev. Mr. and Mrs. Taevs remained in Reno for several days before returning to Medford. Mrs. Taevs, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Abbott, Lake Creek, is a member of the staff of the Beaver Construction com pany of this city and Mr. Taevs is associated with Brown's cafe. The couple will make their home at 525 Albert street. Red Cross Corps Meeting Is Held Members of the Red Cross Staff Assistants' corps held a pic nic and the monthly corps meet ing Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ralph Norris on the Old Stage Road. Special guests were the women who aided In the recent Red Cross swim campaign and the three teachers, Miss Patricia Power of San Francisco, Miss Elanor Coombs and Miss Barbara Osten of Seattle. Following the picnic and meet ing the group held a swimming party at the home o Mr. and Mrs. Alfred S. V. Carpenter, Old Stage Road. About 30 at tended, Mrs. John Day is chairman of the corps. Capt. and Mrs. Burk Visit Families Here Captain and Mrs. Marvin F. Burk are visiting their parents in Medford during Captain Burk's 30-day leave. The cap tain has Just returned from the European theater where he was a radar navigator on a B-17 type aircraft. He was based at Bed ford, England. Upon expiration of his leave Captain Burk will report at Santa Ana, Calif., and j Mrs. Burk plans to accompany him. Captain Burk is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Burk, 53 Rose avenue, and Mrs. Burk is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Field, 24 Crater Lake avenue. Former Resident Here As Guest of Scripters Mrs. Fred Kudrna of Coos Bay will leave for her home today after visiting here since Wed nesday with Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Scripter and Miss Anne Scrip ter at their home, 60 Rose ave nue. Mrs. Kudrna, the former Hazel Cassady, at one time lived in Medford. Miss Mary Lilly Married Thursday Among weddings which took place last week was that of Miss Mary Rose Lilly to Harold Eldon Hanscom. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. D. E. Millard Thursday evening. The bride has resided in the Lone Pine district and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hanscom of Eagle Point, where the couple will live. Salem Family In City As Guest of Relatives Visiting at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Delbert W. Dan iels last week were Mrs. Dan iels' parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Shoemaker of Salem, and her sister. Miss Gertrude Shoemak er, who has served as a mission ary in Africa under the mission ary board of the Christian Church. Mrs. Jordan Hostess For Club Meeting Mrs. Lucretia Jordan enter tained the S. F. club recently at the home of her sister on Ben nett street. Luncheon was serv ed at 1 o'clock and the afternoon spent in games.
