TWILL SEE NO FAST RETURN TO Eugene, Ore., June 30 (U.R) Attorney-General Robert W. Kenny of California sees no chance of a blissful return to prewar "normalcy" for the Pa clfic coast In population, employ ment, Income levels, or indus trial production. Furthermore, he told dele gates to the 56th annual confer ence of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers association, Satur day,, an attempted return would "step up all our headaches to the incurable stage." He ob served that such recapturing of the past had been tried before without appreciable benefit. He advised in the interest of future security, that the new norms of jobs, wages, manufac turing and thinking be accepted, after the war. , He predicted that long before that time national policies, both of government and enterprise must be made if far west de velopment in relation to the na tional economy are to be stabil ized. He invited other regions to present to the west their prob lems, so that fair play and co operation could develop. Tom Purcell, of the Gresham Outlook, was elected president of the association, succeeding E. Palmer Hoyt, publisher of the Portland Oregonian. SHORTAGES FORCE Los Angeles, June 30 (U.R) A cut in, supplies of shorten ing and sugar may force the ra tioning of bread and other baked goods in southern California. Secretary -Manager William Francis Ireland of Associated Bakers of Southern California, warned tonight. Federal rationing officials computed the amounts of sugar and shortening consumed by bakeries in a 1941 to 1942 period and took this as a base for their needs although southern Califor nia's population has increased by three-fourths of a million in re cent years, Ireland said. ' Eagle Point Boy Champion Judge In 4-H Contest Grand champion livestock Judge at the 1945 4-H club sum mer school is the title bestowed " on Wayne Russell, 16, of Eagle Point. He owns a dairy project consisting of two purebred Jer sey calves and a purebred Jer sey cow in production. . In addition to topping the live stock judging contest, Wayne was president of the group liv ing in his fraternity house and was a member of the executive council. Henry Padgham, Jr. of Roxy Ann placed third in the live stock judging contest. Both boys received an Oregon state pennant as a prize for their ex cellent work. Nearly 300 boys from Oregon 4-H clubs com peted. Closing time ror Sunday Too Lats to CIbuMv 5 3U Saturday afternoon" Pleas, remember Medford Man Slays Big Bear In Exciting Hillside Battle Fred Baker, taxi driver, of 1122 West 4th street, had a day off Wednesday, so he bundled his wife, mother and two chil dren into the family car and, to tally unsuspecting, rode straight into an adventure such as the Rogue valley pioneers tell about. Baker's plan was to look at a mining property near the Apple gate divide and, incidentally do a bit of fishing en route. Being a gun lover, he loaded in with the lunch and other picnic items, a .32 special rifle and a .30 cali ber Luger pistol just in case.: Near their destination one of the children spied a huge brown bear. on a ridge high above the road.. Hastily grabbing his rifle. Brown jumped out of the car and threw a shot at the beast, over ISO yards away. The bullet broke one of its hind legs and the, animal started spinning and threshing about, snapping at its wound and emitting blood-curdling snarls. Suddenly the fren zied bruin rolled himself into a ball and came hurtling down through the hillside brush, wind ing up in a thicket. Baker, advancing to the spot, was nearly caught when the ani mal, thought dead, started for him in a series of clumsy three legged lurches. Although handi capped by the leg wound, its claws came too close for comfort as it swung its mighty forepaws liks a boxer "hooking" at an opponent. Baker fired three times while sidestepping the rushes, none of the bullets doing more than fur ther enrage the bear. On his next attempt to get in a fatal shot, the gun merely "clicked" on an empty chamber. . He called to his wife to bring more shells. How ever, his mother, fearing he would run out of ammunition he fore dispatching the bear, had started toward him with the Lu ger. Quickly securing this wea pon Baker stepped in and sent two bullets into the beast's head, one just behind the ear provid ing the coup de grace. It took the combined efforts of the family to roll the 500 pound carcass further down the bank to the car and load it In the trunk. On arrival in town fur ther examination showed that the bear, which measured TVs feet long and 10 Inches between the ears, had a hide so thick and his body so well padded with fat that the bullets which struck him in the back had failed to penetrate far or to break bones. Besides the exciting adven ture, the giant provided a beau tiful fur rug, four . gallons of lard and a great heap of meat for the Baker cold storage locker. . Too Late 'to Classify F.
