SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, Jun 13, 1945 Your Hsalth and It's Care Bf OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.D. Resderi ihould iddrn inquiries to: Dr William Brady. 26S CI Camine Bavarly Hills Calif. WHAT DOCTOR MEANS How should the holder of a., Ph.D. degree be addressed out side of his professional environ ment? I wont ed many years for the degree, simply because I wanted to make myself a better teacher. But I have not Insisted on the title, and for that reason I missed getting a most lucra tive position . Dr. Brady because the man in charge was unaware that I had the degree required. Per haps it would be confusing If we teachers were addressed inpub lic as "Doctor" so many people assume that means physician. . . . (Dorothy Gray, Ph.D. let us call her). One of my playmates with the Doctor Philosophy degree Is a teacher. Another Is a chemist. I never address either by any other title than Doctor or may be robber, hound or pest if he manages to Insinuate his bowl between mine and the Jack. If I were a teacher and had the degree Ph.D. everybody would address me as Doctor or else. May Wt tmjmimnimn-f ORDER I0W FACTORY BLOCKS Green Pine SLABS Green Fir SLABS CUL 2123 Timber P many people In Yankeeland are ignorant of the meaning of such abbreviations as Ph.D., LL.D, D.D., SsD., D.M.D., D.D.S., M.D., D.V.M., signify or even what any one of them means. But we must remember there are mil lions in America. Who can just grasp the idea that a Doctor takes care of sick people, does operations and ushers you into this world and eventually per haps rushes you out And that is perhaps less unfortunate for the public welfare than the credulity of the moron population in re spect to the title "Doctor." They generally assume that any one who calls himself "Doctor" or whose accomplices In business, civil church and social life call "Doctor" must be one and that makes it pretty soft for thous ands of humbugs, quacks and crooks to exploit these child minded people. I am afraid vou have been too modest. Doctor You should have insisted cn your proper title In all formal or official circum stances. Answering your tele phone you should always say "This Is Doctor Dorothy Gray, Answering your doorbell you should say In reply to an Inquiry whether Miss or Mrrs. Gray lives here "This is -the residence of Doctor Gray." If your local newspaper mentions your name It should be as Doctor JJorotny Gray, not Miss or Mrs. Gray. If you serve on any committee or in any public or seml-pumie capacity do not hesitate to cor rect the dumb Hucks who would Gray. You can and should be Gray. Ycu can an dshould be known to everybody as Doctor Dorothy Gray and without be ing In the least uppity or unrea sonable about it. You see, Doctor Gray, I am well educated ever since I tried to put over that (now with drawn) identifying title for den tists they have been telling me that the original meaning of doc tor was teacher, and hence the medical profession has no claim on it as a trade mark.
